Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Interesting we don't know the villains. That guy grappling Thena was a shock.

Presumably the Eternals will degrade into severe infighting and become their own antagonists.

Yep, I just updated my post on the previous page to say the same. I think this is it. They'll fight each other over some moral dilemma related to that volcanic eruption. Sersi and Co vs Ikaris and Co.

The trailer and the promotional materials have established that Sersi and Ikaris don't quite see eye to eye.

I could see Druig being the man behind Kro, and using him as a weapon against the other Eternals.

Possible, but a bit too obvious. Druig screams "Look at me I'm suspicious".

It is interesting, though, how exactly Deviants are connected to that natural disaster. Is it all that natural?

It looks like it was a result of whatever the "Emergence" that Ajal mentioned is.

So probably not natural at all.

Feel pretty safe in guessing that this energy burst is also going to be the premise by which mutants get introduced large-scale into the setting.

Pardon if this has been mentioned already, but ComicBook.com has confirmed Dominique Thorne's Riri Williams debuting in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

"We're shooting Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, right now, and the character of Riri Williams, you will meet in Black Panther 2 first," Feige said in an interview surrounding the release of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. "She started shooting, I think, this week before her Ironheart series."

Yeah, it seems odd to introduce Riri in Black Panther. What, just because she's black? Maybe we'll see her through Wakanda's global spy network.

If they do do Inhumans again I have faith in the MCU etc etc etc

The Inhumans in Agents of Shield were fine and far better than the Inhumans show

They could be switching Riri's focus from Iron Man to someone like Shuri, which would make a lot of sense.

Eve Ewing's run on Riri Williams had an arc where she visited Wakanda, though it was well past her introduction. Maybe Shuri calls her for overseas tech partnership or something.

Secret Wars movie might be in development. Source.

Jim Shooter, who was the writer of Marvel's original Secret Wars event, was a recent guest at the Megacon convention, where he was asked about the possibility of Secret Wars heading to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

"This one clown called me from Marvel," Shooter said. "He wasn't an editor, but some executive of property management which was a little odd. He asked me if I wanted to write a novelization of Secret Wars." Shooter then claims he was sent a retroactive work-for-hire contract, which he ended up turning down. A follow-up call then came from a David Bogart, who wanted to apologize for the previous phone call.

The new retroactive offer was for $10,000, though Shooter initially declined since he was fully aware his previous contract was a work-for-hire. Shooter then stated Marvel didn't have a piece of paper that said the company owned Beyonder, Titania, Spider-Woman, Spider-Man's black symbiote costume or any other Secret Wars characters. He added that Marvel didn't have to retroactively pay him to use the characters, though Bogart insisted he "take the money dummy," which he ended up doing.

"This means you're making a movie, right?" Shooter asked. "I'm not allowed to tell you that," Bogart reportedly replied. Shooter followed that up with, "Well, I think you just did."

The original panel with Jim Shooter was 5 days ago, go here, start at 25:45.

BP2 seems like it has a lot on its plate. Deal with the loss of Chadwick, introduce Iron Man's successor, introduce Black Panther's successor, possibly introduce Namor and Atlantis. I have faith it'll be done well, but it still feels like a lot.

[up][up] Makes sense as the next big event. And, even if they end up adapting more from the 2015 one, still means Doom's likely a major player.

I'm somewhat reminded of how the last Black Panther comic ended with T'Challa calling in literally every single black character in the MU to fend off an alien invasion by symbiote emperor Killmonger.

[up][up][up][up][up] But if Riri's still making powered armor than relating to Shuri doesn't really make sense since her technology base is very different from Tony's.

Its like if a character dabbled in Pym Particles but idolized Bruce Banner whose a radiation specialist instead of Hank.

The new retroactive offer was for $10,000

Only $10,000 for the rights to a property that's sure to make a billion? (Assuming pandemic box office drops are dealt with by then.)

At least it's twice of $5000, but still not even 1 percent of 1 percent.

Given that the Mark L and Mark LXXXV were both nanites, and with Stark dead Shuri is probably the expert on nanite-armor, it'd be easy for Riri to have an in there, whether because she sought out Shuri or vice-versa.

Given that Riri's series is still called Ironheart, I'm pretty sure they're not just going to throw away her being a successor to Tony Stark.
