Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I have my fears about May’s odds of survival here based on the game in that case.

The legend has returned.

Wasn't F.E.A.S.T. already in Far From Home? It was the charity thing May was doing with Happy at the start of the movie.

[up][up]It predates the game by over a decade, so it being in the film isn't really an indication they're adapting that specific plot point.

FEAST implies that we might be getting Martin Li, but beyond that it’s just a thing the game used, not something that’s inherently tied up with the game’s plot.

interestingly, Lea Thompson seems to have no ill will about Howard, making an appearance in the comic and pitching a remake for the MCU.

In the comics the Eye of Agamotto's got a greater variety of mystical powers, though it generally grants its wielder heightened vision. Basically, it allows its wielder to see through disguises, peer into another's soul, and show the recent past, along with other White Magic.

The MCU Eye of Agamotto is arguably more powerful due to its Time Master abilities, but it's also more specialized since that's all it can do.

It's just annoying because they are very much two separate things.

It would be like if Mjolnir was also Captain America's shield.

Or if Mjolnir's power source was also an Infinity Stone.

Which reminds me....In the comics Thor has a vision of his death when he sees Thanos wielding Mjolnir with all six Infinity Gems set in it.

Of course, the movies already made the Cosmic Cube (aka the Tesseract) into an Infinity Stone. In the comics the Cosmic Cubes were actually nascent godlike beings created by other godlike beings. Cosmic Cubes are way more powerful than a single Infinity Gem and are arguably on par with the complete Infinity Gauntlet. The tradeoff is that Cosmic Cubes are harder to wield properly than the Infinity Gauntlet.

I finally saw Black Widow. Honestly, not bad at all. Not my new favorite movie, but the MCU has had much worse. I do feel like Taskmaster was kind of underutilized, essentially being just a weapon for the Big Bad rather than their own character and their ability to mimic largely just manifested as "good fighter who uses a shield and bow", but hopefully they'll be improved in a future movie now that they're free. And maybe get a better costume, because this one looks pretty boring to me.

They wound up turning Taskmaster into a female clone (not literal) of the Winter Soldier.

Thats odd.

What's up with the crystal energy? Is the idea of making her a stretchy person with Mr. Fantastic right around the corner not wanted, or did they throw their hands up and declare the traditionally hard to do correctly stretchy powers too hard?

[up]I don't have a clue, but maybe it's an indication of giving Kamala a stronger connection to Carol and Monica and to nudge her away from the Inhumans because who actually likes those guys anyway?

The leaks that mentioned her new powers (apparently they come from her arm wrist, not powers of her own) also mentioned that her inhuman origin will remain intact. Not appareances of the royal family nor Lockjaw, though.
