Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

I don't think the "average movie-goer doesn't know about this" really qualifies in Spider-Man's case.
Before the MCU he's had 5 movies, multiple TV shows, and video-games that have all made extensive usage of his relationship with Uncle Ben being one of his primary motivations. His origin is probably as well known as Batman's.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Cinema Wins did make a joke in their Far from Home that EDITH really should've been called EDIMS: Even Dead, I Motivate Supervillains.
Admittedly, I could say Tony is a bit more blameless in causing Toomes to become the Vulture. The real reason Toomes became the Vulture is because Damage Control didn't compensate him for early termination of his salvage contract with the City of New York. Beck seems to be directing his anger at Tony but it was Pepper who pink-slipped him (and Civil War kinda suggests that BARF was one thing SI didn't want to weaponize).
Okey Dokey!Yeah I don't think that is the only reason. Like or not, MCU Peter is what most people think of when they think of Spider-Man now a days. While Spider-Verse is only what some people think of. It's a very weird form of Adaptational Displacement. Most fan art MCU Spider-Man. Most fan works, MCU Spider-Man. Most discussions on line, like Tumblr, MCU Spider-Man. Credited this is mainly because the MCU is more popular overall.

Yeah that is why I said "because the MCU is more popular overall."
I never said "only knowing MCU Spidey". I said it's the first one you're average moviegoer thinks of now a days. I think you are misinterpreting my words a bit. Maybe I am not phrasing them right.

Fan-Preferred Couple cleanup threadYou'd think Toomes could've taken it to court or something.
Do you think he even considered that?
Or is it more likely he didn't have the money for it, considering he stated he'd put a lot of it into the venture.
I also think Damage Control could have considered incorporating Toomes group into their work. We see from the beginning of the movie that they've already figured out a lot about cleaning that stuff up. Why not take advantage of it and get the work done even quicker.
But I don't really get salvaging rules so I imagine it wasn't that easy.
One Strip! One Strip!Do you want Daredevil to beat up Tony Stark, or Tony Stark to beat up Daredevil?
There's probably eminent domain laws that would be in play here. Thor actually depicted this accurately, as SHIELD were shown writing a check to Jane in the course of seizing her work.
Okey Dokey!Though it really shouldn't come to a fight.
Asshole though Tony can be, and screw though he is, I'm sure if he were made aware of the issue, he'd seek to find some kind of compromise to compensate them.
One Strip! One Strip!I think when he went for the knee jerk spite move of swiping a truck of alien material from the site he put himself in a position where it was hard to pursue legal options
There was a story like this in a She Hulk run where Stark Whatever was accused of stealing a supervillain’s IP. When Jen finally managed to have a conversation with Tony he just agreed to write a massive check

Forever liveblogging the AvengersBeck's biggest issue is being too egotistical to recognize what it means to be work-for-hire.
Regarding Tony, I actually agree that the MCU movies have given a lot to Tony what other movies would've given to Uncle Ben. As noted the MCU movies don't actually rehash the exact Uncle Ben beats, they instead take advantage of Spider-Man already being established to skip him ahead to instead do different mentor/student dynamic stuff. And FFH definitely has a bit of a regression on Peter's part, though the changed context of Tony being dead at least makes it justifiable. It ultimately boils down to whether or not you're willing to accept this kind of overlap, and I'm honestly fine with it. It's a characterization and relationship that really leverages the state of the MCU in pop culture and Iron Man's place in it, and I honestly think it overall works even if it does make Peter Parker something of a protege.
I personally would really like the MCU to stop beating around the bush and actually acknowledge Uncle Ben, but again I don't want it at the expense of Tony. I've seen people legit suggest "fixing" Peter by having him recognize that Tony was ultimately a terrible influence (on account of him being a shitty bomb-happy capitalist) and learning that ultimately Ben was the only father figure worthy of him, and it's like....No. Just... No.
At the very least we have reason to tone down the whole Iron legacy thing with Peter since Armor Wars and Ironheart are being made.
Like Rhodey is presumably patrolling the world to protect Tony's technology from being used by evil people and Riri Williams will actually be inspired by Tony's exploits to become her own Iron-person.
Spidey doesn't need to be clogged by the Iron legacy now.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."You know, something I imagined just as an idea for Shang-Chi was for Wenwu to create a holiday that celebrates Tony Stark's death and shits on the legacy of Iron Man out of pure pettiness for him screwing with the Ten Rings back in 2008, which Shang-Chi acknowledges is a horrible thing to do.
Although now that I see how many people genuinely hate Stark nowadays, I feel like that would cause a Misaimed Fandom instead.

"I'm Mr. Blue, woah-woah-ooh..."In my defence, I'm only half joking about how evil Tony is.
It's mostly for fun. You are right that it would probably get most people to cheer for Wen-wu though.
One Strip! One Strip!

Far From Home was also had the benefit of a) being live action b) being the immediate follow up to Endgame.
