Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Watts may have directed those movies, but he didn't write Far From Home, and he was one of several writers on Homecoming. A lot of the creative decisions weren't really in his hands.
So unless there was something you actually disliked about his real direction (a lot of which would come down to cinematographers and editors anyway), saying you hate him for...making movies you didn't like, I guess?
Well that seems a bit much.

Favorite directors have to be Coogler, Gunn , and Waititi. I was also surprised by Cate Shortland in Black Widow.
Composers, Silvestri composed the most memorable pieces of the MCU so far (the Avengers and Captain America themes). Göransson has the best soundtrack overall. And also from Black Widow, I still have many of the tunes from Bale in my head.
Worst director have to go to Alan Taylor in Dark World.
While I’d agree that MCU Spider-Man isn’t the best depiction Spidey’s ever had, that isn’t entirely the directors fault. There’s a degree to which he inherited that characterization, and he’s likely not the person responsible for Marvel’s choice not to have Peter grow past his initial characterization.
The MCU Spidey movies, themselves are very well made and well directed films, they’re just made on top of stock I think could have been better.

A director's main job is to tell the cast and crew how they want the film to look like. Writing is usually entirely out of their wheelhouse. If you have a film with good actors and a good script but bad performances and bad lighting choices (not good lighting choices done poorly, that would be the fault of the gaffer), that's when you have a bad director.

My main complaint with the two MCU Spider-Man films (and I've seen others make the complaint too) is how in both movies the villain is some asshole that used to work for Tony Stark.
Other than that, both films are fine.
Like creepy stories? Check out my book! And people seem to like Watts in general. At the very least, Feige liked him enough to trust him with the Fantastic Four.
As for me, my favorite directors are the Russos, Gunn, and Waititi, while my least favorite is definitely Shane Black. With Whedon at least his Avengers films are good enough for me to seperate them from the person, but Black did the only (canon) MCU entry I outright hate, and his smug attitude towards the people who raise legitimate points to take issue with it (not to mention him enabling his pedophile friend and everything else that happened with his awful Predator movie) doesn't endear him very much to me.

Disney100 Marathon | DreamWorks MarathonMy favorite director is either James Gunn or Jon Watts.
Least favorite is either Joss Whedon or Alan Taylor.

Fan-Preferred Couple cleanup threadAlan Taylor gets a pass from me because he was under a lot of Troubled Production and Executive Meddling, and the fact that Dark World is at least a passable film is pretty admirable considering all that. Plus, I remember hearing he was a last-minute replacement for Patty Jenkins or something? (I know she was involved at one point, but I don't know how much she actually did that made it into the final film).

Disney100 Marathon | DreamWorks MarathonYeah, I gotta give credit to Holt for her score on Loki (2021). It's genuinely one of the most unique soundtracks out of the MCU and truly gives an offbeat atmosphere to the show that's hard to put into words.
Plus, there was the time she threw eggs at Simon Cowell.
Well that seems a bit much.
Alright so uh...I fully admit I typed that really quick while at work and didn't think through what I was saying all that well. Four hour sleep brain is cranky and doesn't think well. I meant to say he was just one of my least favorites.
I don't particularly like the creative decisions with Peter's character and I despise Far From Home, but I genuinely don't know how much is Watts and how much is Marvel/Disney.
As far as composers go, Henry Jackman and Alan Silvestri likely get the main spotlight for doing the most iconic MCU score pieces. Giacchino also has some funky work in Doctor Strange:
Directors I think we're pretty set on James Gunn, Russo Brothers and Ryan Coogler. Technically the film hasn't been released yet, but Multiverse of Madness has Sam Raimi, which is likely the most storied career of any director in the MCU so by names and careers, Raimi has the gold medal.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."I think part of the reason Jon Watts' Spider-Man movies have been varying in quality is because he's sorta stuck having to do things that make both Marvel and Sony happy, which is kind of stifling creatively. Thus there's more pressure for him to keep certain aspects of the character the same, while still making him a new and unique character that's different from the other Peter Parkers. Plus, so many people are familiar with Spider-Man already, it's kinda hard to retread his story without boring people to death.
That being said, I do have faith in Watts for Fantastic Four. Since he'll be solely under the Marvel Studios umbrella, I'll bet he'll have a bit more creative freedom to do what he wants with the characters. And it helps that the other film adaptations of the Fantastic Four have been...less than stellar, thus the idea of rebooting them is actually warranted.
"I'm Mr. Blue, woah-woah-ooh..."I actually like the direction they went with MCU Spider-Man, besides Uncle Ben not being mentioned. I actually prefer it to say Webb's take. That said I get the complaints. That being said the majority of the fanbase loves his take and I can also see that too. Tom Holland is just to damn charming to hate.

I actually didn't mind Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man. He had the warm, friendly aspect of Spider-Man that I thought made him somewhat engaging. I just didn't care much for his supporting cast. I honestly don't care much for Tobey Maguire. I guess he's got the dorkiness of Peter Parker down, but I don't really care for him as Spider-Man himself. Meanwhile Tom Holland is both dorky and awkward as Peter, but is still somewhat fun and entertaining as Spider-Man without being too perfect. So I think Tom Holland is the most rounded out of the Spider-Man actors.
I like the fact that we get to see Peter grow up. That said that this next movie has to be him graduating, because Tom is starting to not pass for a High Schooler as well.

Though do you have a problem with any of them in particular.

And the Spider-Man movies are great, easily my favorite live-action incarnation of the character.
