Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Do we actually know if Linda Cardelini is signed on for the show or not? I don't recall ever hearing that.

I find it laughable to think this version of Hawkeye never performed state sanctioned killings or whatever

Not only that, but Clint was apparently partial to said child explosion. He's an Accomplice by Inaction to that if nothing else.

He’s clearly again based on Ultimate Hawkeye who was a state sanctioned assassin.

About the only difference between his time as Ronin and his time as Hawkeye is that no one was giving him orders during the former.

Yeah, but does his family really know the extent of how brutal some of his missions were? For all they know, their husband/father fought aliens and robots. It's not impossible to think the more gruesome parts of the job wouldn't be mentioned while he's working.

Clint probably worked on highly classified stuff, so they probably didn't know what he was up to prior to the Avengers' creation, since that wasn't exactly covert.

I know this is probably one of those "Depends on the writer" questions, but who IS the better shot between Hawkeye and Bullseye? Is there specific difference in their skillsets?

I think it's usually a Jack of All Trades vs Crippling Overspecialization thing. Bullseye can throw literally anything with lethal accuracy. Hawkeye might be a better shot with a bow, but only with a bow. In general, Bullseye is better.

Hawkeye and Bullseye had an archery fight in Hawkeye Freefall.

Hawkeye trounced Bullseye.

I'd say that the difference is that everything in Bullseye's hands is a deadly weapon but Hawkeye has spent decades honing his skill at archery, using a bow with a pull strength ludicrously greater than the greatest real world archers.

In Secret Wars, one of the wrecking crew bragged about having bulletproof skin until Hawkeye put an arrow in him. At that range with Hawkeye's bow, arrows hit harder than bullets.

Bullseye's advantage is that he is really down with killing and Hawkeye isn't. Hawkeye's advantage is that its really embarrassing to certain people to get beaten by Hawkeye and Bullseye is one of those people.

Bullseye is more versatile, Hawkeye is more specialized. A fight between them can go either way, depending on the circumstances.

I'm hoping that the Guardians Holiday Special will involve the team landing on Groot's homeworld, and feature long non-subtitled pieces of dialogue between the various Groots with no other characters present.

Because I honestly wouldn't put it past them.

Though thats not to say Hawkeye isn't necessarily versatile himself, he just has greater preference to the one specific weapon.

Sure, but unless it's Ultimate Hawkeye, I do not see him doing this tongue Bullseye is pretty insane in this regard.

But yeah, Hawkeye is also quite a good Hand-to-Hand fighter. It just doesn't come up that often.

Interestingly I believe Ultimate Hawkeye is explicitly superhuman due to having some kind of enhancements or something.

Prime Clint is just natural training all the way.

"Grounded" apparently also means Hank Pym is an actual domestic abuser, lots of cannibalism, and Wolverine secretly watching the Maximoff twins lose their virginities to each other while fucking their mom.

The Ultimate Universe was kinda screwed up. Ultimate Wolverine in particular.

Whats incredible is that barring the domestic abuser with Hank Pym, Mark Millar wasn't responsible for that.

Well there was homophobia and Hulk eating an alien but the rest of that came from Jeph Loeb after him.

Personally the most embarrassing moment of that entire franchise is Captain America calling Hulk gay just to piss him off to fight the aliens.

Steve Rogers folks, from a noble man with conviction and ideals to that high school jock who called everything gay.
