Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

[up] Yep.

Gotta say, Maya is the only reason I'm watching this show. A deaf, Native American woman that easily beats the everlasting shit out of Daredevil, Bullseye, and Moon Knight? Sign me up.

Just hope some good writer comes around in comics and removes the Mystic Bird of Ruining Perfectly Good Characters that Aaron saddled her with.

Yes! D'onfrio is back. This is great great. Maybe the Netflix cast is not done yet. But it's probably a different version or broad strokes.

Comparing Israel and Magneto is where the mutant metaphor gets messy and kinda lazy, as has been pointed out often.

I pointed this out before but Chris Claremont actually said his view of Xavier and Magneto was as parallels to David Ben-Gurion and Menachem Begin. Which is a really messed up take, to put it lightly. Ben-Gurion was on the "liberal" end of the Israeli political spectrum but he still oversaw the Nakba. Begin was a flat out terrorist who committed massacres on Palestinians (for which he was even arrested by the British!), then his premiership saw the Israeli intervention in Lebanon and alliance with the fascist Phalangist movement, alongside multiple other massacres...and Claremont literally viewed Begin going from terrorist to Nobel Prize-winning prime minister as an inspiration for Magneto's redemption.

I just hope Fisk doesn't get taken out in the first episode but since he's Echo's dad, he might be perfectly fine. Hell, he might be the Big Bad here.

I doubt they'd bring him back just to have him go out like a chump so soon. That would piss of fans

Their probably planning to have him have a major villain role.

Crazy theory, but I wonder if he might be connected to Valentina and whatever she is up to, you know forming the Thunderbolts.

To answer the question from last page in another way: Hawkeye Freefall has Hawkeye dressed as Bullseye and Bullseye dressed as Hawkeye square off

Hawkeye (dressed as Bullseye) was in a very bad mood so their confrontation was very lopsided against Bullseye dressed as Hawkeye

I do hope this movie SHOW is so good it shuts up everyone everywhere about how much Hawkeye sucks, cause I'm sick of hearing it.

Hey now, I like Hawkeye. Comics Hawkeye is a human dumpster and he's great. MCU Hawkeye has all the fun sucked out of him.

MCU Hawkeye is basically just Ultimate Hawkeye but without the psychopathy that lead him to doing some decently cool stuff.

It's hard to be fun when you're stuck with Jeremy Renner's 3 facial expressions. (He's a good actor, but his voice does most of the work making his emotions... happen.)

I still say he was fun in Age of Ultron. It's when you get to Endgame and he's some edgy anti hero that I stop caring about him. Because that is just a boring direction.

[up][up] Lack of good feats doesn’t help.

I remember watching this clip from one of Renner’s movie Wind River and at the end he basically goes cold sniper slaughters a group of armed gun men in quick succession while looking like a ghost.

Hawkeye could use some cool sniper stuff.

[up] What did he even do in Ultron exactly?

  • Tasered Wanda when she tried to mind rape him. (And he made a crack about how Loki did it to him already.)
  • Gave the Avengers a place to crash.
  • Gave Wanda an inspiring speech about how she’s an Avenger if she keeps it together.

[up][up]I found him funnier and a better character. Him being revealed to gave a family was interesting, he acts more like the heart, and I loved his speech to Wanda.

He really is Ultimate Hawkeye without the badassery.

Well at least his families still alive I’ll give him that.

AOU was definitely Clint's best showing. His interactions with the Maximoffs were one of the film's better aspects, and that bond serving as the backbone of his cameo in Civil War is what turned it from me not giving a damn to actually enjoying it. There was also going to be a scene of him bonding with Bucky in the prison transport car over having also been a victim of brainwashing, which would've been an interesting angle to pursue if they ever had any real interest in developing him any.

Tasered Wanda when she tried to mind rape him. (And he made a crack about how Loki did it to him already.) Gave the Avengers a place to crash. Gave Wanda an inspiring speech about how she’s an Avenger if she keeps it together.

And in the first movie, lets not forget how he clowned Loki with that exploding arrow. He probably did need more appearances though.

I don't have any issues with Jeremy Renner either, which is probably why I don't have any problem with him.

Likely teh biggest mistake they made with him was not having him do more with his cameo in Thor.

I remember his cameo in Thor. It was during one of the best scenes of the film. I wish he had more scenes with Coulson as the two's banter was funny.

Should be noted that the Israel comparison is even more apt given the current direction of X-men comics.

One big difference is that so far there's no actual Palestine equivalent. Yet.

I do think the probably with Renner as Hawkeye is that he came across as too broody. And while some broodiness is justified, I think it took up too much of his general demeanor.

I mean, thinking back, there are plenty of scenes that have me thinking “Yeah, that sounds like Hawkeye”. I just thinking you need someone who could do it with a bit more cockiness (and also someone who didn’t look too much like Chris Evans, who DOES honestly look more like comics Clint).

I don’t know who that would be, though.

Oh God! Natural light!
