Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Thanos looked pretty lame back in the day too.

[up] It's pretty interesting thinking Infinity War is responsible for most of Thanos' Memetic Badass reputation. Before then he was just "the guy who sat on a chair all the time."

I thought the Ultimate Nullifier was the thing for beating Galactus, using it again for Kang isn't cool, you don't re-use Macguffins. Might as well just Snap Kang away.

The Nullifier is basically Marvel Comics' go to weapon for dealing with cosmic threats that the writers have no other means of defeating that have too much cosmic power to be defeated by any other means, which includes but is not specifically limited to Galactus. Galactus was the first character who was threatened with it, but he was not the last.

It's never been used on Kang, but it was once used on this guy, another evil future bad guy (albeit the evil future version of a guy who, in the present, is already extremely powerful).

You guys do realize that technically wasn't Kang we saw in the Loki finale, but one of his variants, right? I totally expect Kang to act far more imposing once he actually shows up.

I love it when villains sound casual. Villains that are super serious or that are all "RAHRAH, I'M GONNA CONQUER THE WORLD!" can come off as quite boring to me.

When it's used sparingly, sure, but when they all sound like that, it loses whatever little "zing" of "subverted expectations" you were trying to achieve.

As said at least Mandarin appears to be a pretty serious guy.

I dunno, I found He Who Remains much more entertaining than, say, Hela. I wouldn't say they sounded exactly the same.

...We haven't really had much in the way of non-serious villains, though? Ultron had quips but that's about it. Everybody else has been pretty dour, with a few moments of levity or snark here and there.

I for one welcome Kang being a bowl of mixed nuts, assuming the conqueror version(s) we're getting are anything like the one we've already seen.

I doubt it, He Who Remains was loopy most likely because of millions of years of isolation. I don't think the actual Kang will be that crazy when he appears.

Maybe we'll get a different version of Kang every time we see him. He has like a billion personas, right? So maybe he'll act completely different each time. Could be a fun acting gig.

He Who Remains even said he'd be back through multiverse shenanigans, so even if we get a serious Kang we could always have an eccentric Immortus in the background.

Maybe they'll do a thing where Kang is naturally more like his Immortus self, but he's actively trying to act like a serious supervillain.

[up][up] I'm not sure that would work since Immortus is scared of Kang because he is so much worse than anything he can imagine. As he stated that while many of him were harmless scientist, others were people willing to wage war against all of creation just to have it for themselves.

[up] Oh, I don't mean he wouldn't still do horrific things. Just that there's maybe some hints that he's still fundamentally the same guy deep down. Loki did establish that a person can do horrible things in the name of putting on an act to try and fool themselves.

...I mean, WandaVision revealed that Wanda's had her hex powers her whole life and the Mind Stone experiments simply strengthened them, and implied it was the same for Pietro, so the "first mutant" claim may change depending on future retcons.

I just now thought that since the multiverse is now a thing, that means every future movie even the ones not apart of the MCU can technically be apart of it.

That doesn't mean much in of itself since it could just be them adapting the Scarlet Witch lineage that was introduced in James Robinson's Scarlet Witch book.

No, she didn't.

She mentioned that the concept of a Scarlet Witch had been written about, but Agatha makes it clear she considered it to be a myth. Nothing in the show gives us any indication there was a previous person who held the title of Scarlet Witch.
