Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Every day I am more and more annoyed that the Cosmic Cube, a thing that is very much its own thing in the Marvel Universe, is just a thing that was hiding an Infinity Stone in the MCU. It's lame.
Also, speaking of Kang: Boy Howdy, does the MCU sure love having villains that just sound like... dudes.
My various fanfics.Kang kind of is just a dude, right? He's just a regular genius human in the 31st century who happened to be smart enough to break time and multiverse travel and nowhere else in time is prepared for a super-genius standing on the shoulders of the guy who stood on the shoulders of the guy who stood on the shoulders of the guy who stood on the shoulders of Tony Stark.
He's Kang the Conqueror! Master of Time and Space! He has presence! He has gravitas! He has a certain je ne sais quoi. But much like Ultron or Hela or 90 percent of MCU villains, he's just a dude. Who talks like a normal regular person. Because this is the MCU, and everything has to be grounded and down-to-earth and smaller. If a villain actually sounds like, ya know, a supervillain, it's either Thanos or Red Skull being the exception to the rule, or it's Ronan the Accuser and Surtur where the joke is that they're trying to sound like dramatic, more serious villains but they're in a cartoon bullshit whoopie cushion sound effect universe where no one cares. They exist in a setting where the destruction of Asgard leaving thousands of innocent people as refugees is a punchline.
Maybe he'll be different when we see one of the alternate Kangs in Ant-Man. Maybe I'll be surprised. But I'm not holding my breath.

My various fanfics.Think he means supervillain who talks casually.
As opposed to having grandiose and dramatic speech patterns like Dr. Doom.
Basically Bendis speak.

"The Black Rage makes us strong, because we must resist its temptations every day of our lives or be forever damned!"That's why when Doom shows up, this should be the default reaction from ANY MCU character.

They aren’t good characters though, especially Crash Test Doom.

Mandarin seems to be shaping up to be a pretty dignified guy. Helps that Shang appears to take him pretty seriously due to their relationship. Less snark and more just plain dislike.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Mind you I said "better" not necessarily "good" characters.
I don't mind a villain being depicted with dignity. It's the way the writers often buy into Doom's hype, often at the cost of the story or other characters, I have an issue with. There are times when I can't tell the difference between an official depiction of Doom and a story about him posted on fanfiction.net.
I presume the more dignified presentation of the Mandarin is due to the backlash from 3's version and because they want to appeal to the Chinese market.
Honestly, part of Doom's appeal is that he CAN back up most of his boasts and is genuinely one of the smartest men in Marvel. He's pure comic book cheese played straight.
I guess that's just not for everyone. Plus writers recently have shown Reed in a really bad light these past few years.

There is money to be made so of course they will.
The MCU is popular in China, unlike Star Wars, so Shang-Chi is actually a valid choice that can appeal to China without being like Mulan.
Like Lucas Film's attempts at pandering to China is the more baffling parts with bits like the Stormtrooper march in the great wall of China, downplaying Finn in Chinese promotional material, as well as taking the name Star Wars out of Solo.
None of which has worked.

"The Black Rage makes us strong, because we must resist its temptations every day of our lives or be forever damned!"Honestly, I'm really intrigued at how they will handle Shang Chi and Mandarin's familial relationship, since Familial Piety is quite important in China.
To the point where the usual cold and fun hating Chinese censors actually let Coco be shown in China thanks to it's family themes.

Also given that Marvel didn't establish Kang was an alias and that his real name was Nathaniel Richards until much later (Kang first appeared in the early 1960s; his real name was revealed in 1992), it's entirely possible Lee and Kirby just intended for it to be a "future-sounding" sci-fi name.
