Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

The Emmys are generally more accepting of sci-fi. Heck, The Mandalorian has even more nominations than Wandavision.

The legend has returned.

Canon concerns aside:

Meanwhile, the Marvel Television era of MCU shows have received a range or 1-3 nominations per series.

Looking good for Deadpool's chances for MCU.

Wonder if they will use Taskmaster.

It should also be said that Marvel is notorious for doing non-to-small campaigns for the Oscars or other awards.

I think it was for the first Avengers movie that Disney intended to do campaign for it and putting the bill themselves, but Marvel preferred to not campaign and use the money for their productions. This was originally thought to be philosophy of notorious cheapskate Ike Perlmutter, but even after he lost control they've kept that rule and barely do any campaign for awards, with BP being the notable exception.

There was also a For Your Consideration campaign for Endgame but it was completely ignored.

The Oscars really are bullshit.

I found out recently for The Rise of Skywalker they had to actually change their scoring on a movies musical scores to force TROS into the category because it’s entire soundtrack was just remixes of OT tracks.

[up][up] Compared to the campaign Disney did for The Lion King that same award season, the Endgame campaign was nothing.

To be fair, there were simply much better movies than Endgame in most of those categories. I enjoyed the hell out of the movie but there were better performances, better scores, better actors and whatnot. Just about the only area I'd say it was legit robbed in was VFX.

[up][up][up] Seriously? That's pretty low and desperate.

I recall there were a couple of memes that Suicide Squad won an oscar before an MCU movie did.

I recall that to be consider for best score, the movie has to have at least 60% original music.

They made it even lower for Rise apparently.

It didn't even win, so what was even the point?

TBF, any John Williams still beats the pants off 90 percent of the contemporary film scores out there.

[up]If Disney had all that much pull we wouldn't really be having a discussion about Marvel being snubbed.

I mean, which MCU movies do you think deserve Oscars? And for what categories?

The MCU just doesn't feel like that kind of series to me. They're created with almost machine-like efficiency and seem designed to be crowd-pleasers first and foremost. That's not to say they don't have themes or artistry to them, but rarely do I find myself thinking that an MCU film, even the ones I love, are operating at the peak of cinema that the Oscars are supposed to represent.

The Oscars are a Hollywood circle-jerk with increasingly little relevance to what actually draws people to see movies.

Yeah, I don't give a shit about the Oscars or the people who award them, and I don't get why anybody else does.

Even putting aside the arthouse snobbery they're notorious for, who gives a fuck about their opinions? What makes them more entitled to award a film than your average moviegoer?

[up][up][up] Is that what the Oscars SHOULD be about though?

For the record, I roll my eyes at the clear biases that the Academy clearly does have, but let's say, in a completely idealized world where the Oscars are perfect, what should they prioritize? Should they reflect the most popular movies? Or the movies that explicitly aim to be more than popular?

Unpopular opinion (for this thread): accepting that awards shows are messed up and out of touch is part of the fun of awards show season. It's kind of like watching Nailed It! where you know nothing matters but you want your favorites to win anyway.

Popular opinion: Don Cheadle showing up for two minutes of TFATWS for a fun cameo and getting an Emmy nomination for it is sending me.

X7[up]

That is basically my stance. I fully accept that the Oscars are an out of touch circle jerk (this discussion has been going at least since the 1980s, when Do the Right Thing infamously got snubbed due to not appealing to the mostly older white voting block), but I can't really think of any MCU movies that were robbed of awards. They are frequently nominated in well deserved technical categories like special effects, costume design, makeup and production, but in most instances there are better movies and better performances each year.

Like, I loved Josh Brolin as Thanos, but I'd be very hard pressed to say he was the best actor in all of 2018.
