Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

That actually is a John Wick character. Laurence Fishburne, if I remember right. ...So if Elihas comes back, that'd be a fun power.
The legend has returned. So after a few months of tentative dips into the box office pool, Black Widow (2021) dove in head first and made the sort of money a Marvel movie is expected to make. This franchise's appeal isn't slowing down just yet.

$80 million is still in the low end, though. And I guarantee you they wouldn't have disclosed the D+ number if they were confident in the results (Mulan had $90 million on D+ if I recall, yet Disney refused to disclose that). The film would've undoubtedly made more if it was theatrical-only.
What worries me about this is that Disney could take the wrong lessons from this and decide to PA the rest of their 2021 slate and their entire 2022 slate (excluding 20th titles). The last thing they want is to see a talent pushback or boycott threats like WB, who is paying dearly for that (do you honesty think getting spun off to a conglomerate that makes hillbilly trash is a good thing?).

"The devil's got all the good gear. What's God got? The Inspiral Carpets and nuns. Fuck that." - Liam GallagherAnd I think there's contractual obligations with Sony to release Spider-Man in December

It's been pointed out by many in Hollywood trades that Disney gets nearly all the dough in PA than they do splitting the dough with theaters. The expectation is that Disney could double down on PA so that it can take more profits and reduce their dependability on theaters, which Disney has for years had a notoriously difficult relationship with.
By that logic, why would you "go back to normal" when you can increase your share of the profits?

I think they really just hate Brie Larson specifically but don't wanna come out and say it.
A lot of people don't have good enough internet to stream stuff reliably.
Exiting the theater system entirely would be cutting off a revenue stream

Tell that to the dumbass hedge funds and equity firms constantly pumping up Netflix stock like it will replace TV and theatrical entirely (yes, they really believe this).
Disney+ is also not available in many parts of the world, as mentioned in Raya and the Last Dragon discussions and Southeast Asia availability.
So that does feel like a slippery slope argument.
Well, not just that, but Disney themselves accelerating that trend by praising the almighty D+ gods, destroying their own profitable businesses in the process.

"The devil's got all the good gear. What's God got? The Inspiral Carpets and nuns. Fuck that." - Liam GallagherOh, I would love for them to take the opportunity to introduce Toni Ho. She's the daughter of Yinsen, the scientist that helped Tony build the first suit in the cave.
She's a super genius and builds her own armor, eventually taking the Iron Patriot mantel. She's a lesbian too.

I'm pro Sam Wilson suddenly being able to talk to birds.
Being able to talk to animals is a great and fun power and I hate that modern adaptions always skimp out on that.
