Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Btw, should we now make a "What if?" forum or is it still too early?

My one irritation with Taskmaster's "mimicry" power is that it kind of disappears in the climax. I was expecting Alexei to have an advantage over her specifically because she hasn't studied him since he was locked away for twenty years, but nope. Then Natasha manages to overcome her despite no change having occurred in their relative power levels.

Ah, so that's what changed. I was curious what you meant by "they're under no obligation to follow the comics exactly. Get over it."

Oh I'm tempted to read that.

Though its clear from the onset that Tasky here is very different. Tony Masters is a pretty jovial and talkative guy compared to the more silent Terminator we've seen in the trailers.

Okay I just typed a certain word on the search bar on the Black Widow page and yup I can see whats going on now. [lol]

Random thought, but since Shang-Chi is bringing more Asian prominence to the MCU, this could be a chance to give Iron Fist another shot.

In that of bringing in the Immortal Weapons of his mythology like Fat Cobra or the Bride of Nine Spiders. Not much has actually been done with them so there is potential.

I would have liked to see a tournament between the Immortal Weapons for Iron Fist's third season.

I’m 99.9% sure if we do see Iron Fist in the MCU proper he will be recast. Charlie Cox would be asked back, so would Mike Colter and Krysten Ritter. Not Iron Fist.

The Seven Heavenly Cities tournament is the most iconic arc in IF history. It wouldn't be a bad thought to adapt it for a Shang Chi sequel, though by its very nature the tournament approach works better for a serialized show.

You could adapt it with Shang-Chi in place of the Iron Fist and swap the Prince of Orphans (who acts in the story as a enigmatic, mentor-esque figure on the heroes side) for the Iron Fist.

The enigmatic mentor would be a complete 180 from the “Thundering Dumbass”.

On the other hand, this runs into the same kind of problem as all the "Black Panther should fight Namor / Doom / etc" wishlists - that ultimately it cases the character to start being used as a vehicle for other characters' stories, rather than their own.

Shang-Chi already dances with that, seeing as he's going up against an Iron Man villain, and only sidesteps it because they're utilizing that character as an explicit replacement for a Shang-Chi story. I want to see more of the Hands of Kung Fu stuff and characters in Shang-Chi (and admittedly it's a bit shaky with Shang-Chi in the first place since those characters share so much in terms of exposure and story space), but I don't really want his movies to just be Iron Fist movies.

I'm honestly fine with the Composite Character route for Shang-Chi to take up Iron Fist's rogues gallery.

I'd prefer that if they were going to adapt Iron Fist, they do so by adapting Iron Fist.

Has it? I don't know if Marvel Studios has ever indicated that they're unwilling to adapt the Heroes for Hire characters further now.

Well, we know Finn Jones isn't coming back.

People pretty much associate him with the bad Iron Fist. The second season was better, but I'm assuming Marvel is still gonna want to distance themselves from him.

Maybe they might recast him as someone else later on. Who knows?

But yeah. Danny as a character needs a chance to get a better interpretation. Just amalgamating him with Shang Chi wouldn't help that.

I think the underlying problem is moreso that Shang Chi is kind of barebones at "great stories" to adapt. Iron Fist actually has a more hallowed history in comics despite his modern reputation as a Butt-Monkey.

His modern reputation as a Butt-Monkey only makes me want him to be re-adapted and fixed more.

Fix that shit quickly! Don't let the memes win! Fix it!

If you can't put in the effort to fix something that got wrecked due to poor effort, why should I trust them to do well with a new property?

This admittedly doesn't fix the issue with Shang's lack of foes, but I'm sure there's a solution to that. He's got a new comic recently right? Hopefully, that will give them something to mine.

Fix Danny! Fix him!

Poor Shang, he only came back into prominence when his movie was announced. I know as very little about him as I do the Eternals.

At least Iron Fist has the Heavenly Tournament and his bromance with Luke.

[up] Granted it’s not really good memes. Like the IF Netflix show, even the memes aren’t that great.

[up][up]

Memes are deadly. They can destroy a character, a series, or a franchise.

I find some humours I admit, but in most cases, and it's easy to just sit back and enjoy them, but I find they do far more harm than good to be honest.

Their self perpetuating nature means you have to constantly fight against the influence they have due to the ease of invoking them.

Plus, any character can be memed and ruined by a cheap joke. Sure, it's funny when it's a dude or show you hate, but what happens when it's something that doesn't deserve the bad rep?

This is why they should fix the issue. Sure you can let it happen to someone no-one cares about, but anyone can fall under that veil in the right circumstances.

Fight those memes. Fight them with everything you've got.
