Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but something that struck me about Taskmaster - Isn't the version in the movie pretty similar to the MCU version of Ghost? Not just the Gender Flip, but also the aspect of being forced to be involved in wetwork from a young age.

1. Please, it's the internet. The only reason you haven't seen any criticism is because the movie's only been out for a few hours. Give it some time.
2. So? Yes, it was lazy writing, but you can still do things with their similarities. Like, I don't know, the scenario I just lined out. Hope they get to interact.
3. I'm not saying "Obviously it makes sense, you're all idiots if you don't understand!" (please read that in the most snooty voice possible for the full effect). I understood what they were going for, and while I know many won't like it I personally didn't mind. Would I have preferred a more accurate Taskmaster? Sure, but I didn't mind this one.
You could argue the process was less refined with Bucky, hence his occasionally breaking control. That and seeing Steve might have helped.
So yeah. I saw it. I went through three theories on who Taskmaster was. First I immediately assumed he was a she, based on her being activated in the Red Room. Second I thought it was Melina, since I could remember if they were ever seen together in the trailers. Finally I struck gold with realizing it was Dreykov's daughter.
Yelena was indeed gold, but the fact she's now trying to kill Clint is worrying. Wondering if her and Walker will be part of some kind of team. We got the new Black Widow, and the US Agent / ex-Captain America. They've certainly got the beginnings of the Dark Avengers.
One Strip! One Strip! There is little to zero chance of Taskmistress 'evolving' into the sassy badass that is the male Taskmaster from 616 and other mediums, let's not kid ourselves . Marvel always waste these characters or end up using them in even worse ways
Sometimes Marvel Studios simply don't know when to read the room, and this is one of those times. Not everything needs to have a twist like this, and it's perfectly fine to complain about it without being labelled a sexist. If you're ignored for it, fine, 'ignorance is bliss' after all, but at least you're not being quiet and munching your popcorn while they pull stupid crap like this, pretending everything the MCU or this ongoing and now so-predictably boring Hollywood agenda does is critic-proof. People are tired of this, and they're letting them and their fanboys know it

I know. Again, I'm not saying it's perfect, there are definite flaws and I would much rather have had a more accurate version. But, for what we got, I'm fine with it.
Will she become a perfect adaptation? No, obviously not. But there's no harm in theorizing how she might become relatively more in line with her comics counterpart, especially after Zemo became badass after his bland introduction in Civil War.
And no, I'm not saying all people who dislike the twist are sexist. Some will just find it predictable and not add much to the story. But let's not kid ourselves, about a hundred internet trolls who haven't even seen the movie yet are already making videos about how the character's been "ruined."

She could re-name herself Finesse? I actually think their version of Taskmaster is a Composite Character with her, considering the Gender Flip.
One Strip! One Strip! There's a podcast duo I follow with a side project that mocks comic book clickbait. Naturally, they take the piss out of a whole bunch of nakedly sexist, right-wing conspiracy-wanking articles that rail against this perceived "woke agenda" in media. It's got me with a lot of thoughts in my mind, mostly how hilarious yet sad this whole display is, but also "you know, it'd be nice if these chucklefucks could take this energy and rage and channel it towards being mad at the ACTUALLY bad things Hollywood and the entertainment industry at large does.".
Self-serious autistic trans gal who loves rock/metal and animation with all her heart. (she/her)Pretty impressed. What struck me was how Dreykov stood out from other MCU villains in having no super or technological powers (not to mention less screen time), yet committed enough atrocities to make him a convincingly vile villain. Manipulating young girls into becoming assassins, forcing a Widow to kill herself when she's free from his influence, mind raping his own daughter and turning her into Taskmaster. Yeah, he's pretty scary. That's not even getting into him having Natasha's biological mother murdered.

"The devil's got all the good gear. What's God got? The Inspiral Carpets and nuns. Fuck that." - Liam GallagherThe reason the Winter Soldier situation works as well as it does is because we got to know what Bucky was like and his relationship with Steve before his life got ruined. We have a concrete idea of what was taken from him in the process, and therefore also some idea of where he can go afterwards. Yes, the montage of his torture was very well done and acted to sell you on how being treated like that is inherently horrifying by its lonesome.
But it's not a thing you can replicate willy-nilly, even if you make the torture even more nightmarish. Torture is but one ingredient in the recipe of an effective take on the archetype. Tasky's issue is that she doesn't seem to have some kind of other interesting spin to make her feel like more than Diet Bucky. And of all the possible different angles that could've been explored with her... tons of fanfiction has probably already looked at that with Bucky, or more.

I feel I should clarify I don't love this Taskmaster. I thought the fight scenes were cool, I don't really care one way or another that she's a girl, I'm happy she survived, and I'm hoping she'll become more faithful like Zemo did. Otherwise, I completely agree with the other criticisms.
To maybe get on another topic: did Red Guardian actually fight a Captain America, not Steve Rogers but someone like Isaiah? David Harbour apparently stated that all his stories are true, so maybe there was a William Burnside we've yet to meet?
That probably would be for the best, I did the same before today.
Saw Black Widow today, and I did enjoy it.
I assure you, I'm perfectly trustable personYeah a fresh thread would be a good idea, both to enable people here to avoid Black Widow spoilers and to enable people to discuss Black Widow without worry about being spoiler for other MCU stuff.
