Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

It should be noted that Hulkling has nothing to do with the Hulk, he just took the name because he thought it was cool and could make it work, and the rest of the Young Avengers were essentially rolling as kid Avengers.

What actually messes up Park as Amadeus Cho is that he's only a few years younger than Claudia Kim, who played Amadeus's mother Helen Cho in Avengers: Age of Ultron, and I don't think the MCU could get away that easily with her Playing Gertrude or him being Hollywood Young. Unless they recasted Kim's Helen they'd most likely go for much younger talent for Amadeus.

There could be more than one Helen Cho in the world.

I mean, sure. Could be more than one Steve Rogers in the world too.

The name wasn't an accident, she's clearly meant to be the same character, her role as a world-famous geneticist is clearly meant to allude to and even foreshadow her children's super-genius intellects. There's nothing stopping them from just writing her off as coincidentally named but why? That's not as fun, kinda makes it come off like them admitting they fucked up the first time.

So, I just rewatched Thor for Loki and I have a couple of things I want to...let loose.

1. The scene where Loki finds out his origins and is tearing into Odin about it and Odin just falls asleep in the middle of his invective is one of the most hilarious and abrupt scenes I've ever seen from these movies.[lol]

Holy shit, the dude just...lapses into a coma to avoid an awkward conversation where somebody is yelling at him! That's a party trick right there!

"Hey, did you wash the dishes?"

"...No?"

"What? You promised that you would before I came back! How could you be so irresponsible?"

"(Falls into a coma)"

"You can't keep doing that to escape your responsibilities! One day, I'll get a do-not-resituate order for you!"

That explains Thor: Ragnarok where he chooses the moment of his death to talk about Hela: it's the best possible moment to escape awkward conversations. By turning into fairy dust afterwards.

Yeah, that's still weird.

2. Super advanced god-alien technology...and they still use horses. Not even tech-horses, flesh-and-blood steeds. They don't even look weird.

3. We have a trope for Black Vikings. Why does nobody talk about the Asian Viking? Or the one pretending to Errol Flynn, with the goatee and the bloody rapier?

4. So, there's some things about Loki that I'm surprised didn't get touched on in the first episode Loki of Loki but I feel that's more Loki stuff so I'll be over there to talk about it.

One of the screenwriters for Thor described Odin’s convenient Odinsleep as “just like the dad from Sanford and Son.” tongue

The Frost Giants never really became a recurring group like in the comics, so it simply never came up. Laufey died, Thor stopped Loki from blowing up their planet, and they were never seen again.

Anywho, this is fun:

An attempt to make a real life discus that bounces and can be slotted like Captain America's shield. It certainly doesn't come out as the toughest shield in the world, most like a tougher-than-normal frisbee, but it's still cool.

[up][up][up]Part? He is, biologically, a Frost Giant.

And, well, not particularly. Maybe to that sense that of estrangement Loki feels towards Odin but, eh...not like the Frost Giants matter after that.

Odin's horse is weird though. During the scene where Odin arrives on Jotunheim to bail out Thor, he's riding on Sleipnir the eight-legged horse. So, at least there's some horses of a different color on Asgard.

And yes, I know of Sleipnir's origins in Norse mythology. I'm sure the wonderful world of fanfiction will go into more detail for you, if you're curious.

Loki also views odin and Frigga as his actual parents their too.

He in fact time travelled and orchestrated his biological father Laufey's death and killed him while screaming at him that "YOU WILL NEVER STRIKE ME AGAIN!"

"That's right mortal. By channeling my divine rage into power, I have forged a new instrument in which to destroy you."

[up][up][up][up][up]Yes, yes, the internet has already informed me about Slepnir, Loki's eight-legged child while he was a female horse.

Weird, I didn't notice Odin's horse had eight legs. I was mostly paying attention to Loki's awkwardness like he's wondering if he's going to be punished too and Odin giving the verbal smackdown on Thor. "These are the actions of a boy. Let them be treated as such."

...Did we ever get that war? I think it just...stopped.

[up][up][up][up]I'm going to assume those aren't Loki spoilers for the sake of my sanity and your continued existence.

This is hyperbole, by the way. By no means do I wish to do harm to this person.

[up]Supposedly abandoned by the royal family in a way that had nothing to do with Odin's war and Odin still somehow planned for him to become King of the Frost Giants, a race of hostile monsters to Asgard. (Yes, it was to defend humanity, just saying that to preclude any attempts to act like that's a point against it.)

Jeez...

As a matter of fact, there’s a lot of mostly off screen wars between Thor 1 and 2 as a result of the Bifrost being broke and Asgard being less able to project their might around the nine realms.

So we can probably assume that the frost giant retaliation was part of it but then Thor went and smacked them down again but this time it wasn’t an arrogance
