Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Make it explicit and important in the show or else, just another half-assed move.

Yeah, I'm not expecting it to get addressed on the show outside of Lady Loki and maybe Kid Loki.

So random thought: assuming No Way Home does end up being a Maguire/Garfield crossover, would that mean that Stan the Random Bystander/Stan the Distracted Librarian are both actually the Watcher Informant?

I recall hearing that Stan's cameo in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was planned to originally have him mention working as a DJ at a strip club, basically confirming that he does travel across universes for his cameos.

There have been rumors that Sophia Di Martino will be playing Lady Loki since she was first cast, and IIRC there were early set photos that showed her in a very Loki-esque outfit.

Anyone else find it amusing that the movies have pretty much adapted the tight longform continuity style of the comics?

Like every product is either a technical sequel or continues a story or arc established in a previous film?

Wanda Vision for instance calls back Age of Ultron, Civil War, Infinity War, Endgame, and Captain Marvel. While Winter Falcon is technically Captain America 4.

[up][up] I could see it. Regardless it is suspect that she is a apparently a main cast member that doesn't have an officially confirmed character nor has appeared in any previews.

How long until it starts to fall into the pitfalls of long form comic storytelling, with the status quo always reverting because "it's what the audience is familiar with"/the writers don't like the changes? Or hyping up every new installment as "the greatest challenge the hero has EVER faced!" when it would be better if treated as a non-event story? Or reminding the audience what they just saw and treating it as foreshadowing/establishing plot points while ignoring and contradicting the older foreshadowing and plot points?

[up]I mean, most of those can't happen because it's a live-action medium, so you can't, say, go back to Tony Stark being alive if people/writers don't like Ironheart because Robert Downey Jr. may not be available or even willing to return, and you can't really run into the pitfall of one-upping every story to challenge the same character when you're constantly rotating them out. Especially when they can only make/release so many movies and television shows in a year before they start cannibalizing each other.

Yeah I'm not sure where your getting the idea that we might revert to the status quo.

Its unlikely for Downey and Evans to return to the roles in any major capacity especially as they get older.

As others have made it clear, the movies have been doing what the Comics can't/won't and changing the status quo, both out of necessity and due to not being bound to that endless narrative that has come to define comics.

So far they've been pretty good at avoiding the pitfalls of the comics.

Sure Iron Man's arc had a few odd resets mixed in there, but overall the status quo has shifted pretty significantly. And there isn't really any sign of Marvel hyping up any future threat as being bigger than Thanos.

While there are villains out there who could theoretically surpass Thanos, Marvel clearly isn't rushing to them to get an Avengers 5 that is bigger than Endgame was out the door.

Kang isn't even slated to appear until Quantumaina, and that movie doesn't release until 2023. And they haven't even announced an Avengers 5.
