Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Before getting distracted
Less like 'I must fight all crime so no skateboarding teenager loses their parental figure as I did' and more... he got distracted by secret parent backstory.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersIt was more he started off with a revenge mission (catch guy who killed Uncle Ben) but in the process came to realize what was really important (preventing tragedies like Ben's death from happening to others) and so abandoned the initial revenge goal.
I liked that. Lots of stories with a "revenge is wrong" moral try to have it both ways. The hero stops being obsessed with revenge, but the person they want revenge on still ends up punished, one way or another. Here, Uncle Ben's killer legit gets away, Peter gets no closure on that front, and he just has to live with it.

Children of Dievas - my webcomic about the Northern CrusadesDoes this film include reincarnation? That's the vibe I got from the montage shot of Richard Madden and Gemma Chan.
Children of Dievas - my webcomic about the Northern CrusadesIn seriousness, "We've been here for a super long time and watched the world develop but also when the Earth was invaded multiple times we were like, 'Not my problem, fuckers!'" I hope the film has a good explanation for this. This is an awkward point in the franchise's history to suddenly introduce a secret society of super-powered people who shepherd humanity or whatever.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.The Superman Stays Out of Gotham question re: Thanos will definitely have to hang over any “preestablished hero” plot going forward.
Which is a stumble for my ideal “no more Fantastic Four origin please” situation but hey.
Re: reincarnation, the implication is that they are hella immortal I think.
Also... I wanted it to be more .... colorful I guess?

Yeah, imagine having to justify the X-Men like that:
Cyclops: Professor! The Avengers are under attack by Thanos! What should we do?!
Xavier: Well, Scott, that sounds like a whole lotta not my fuckin' problem.

Disney100 Marathon | DreamWorks MarathonEverybody looks really good here, but Angelina Jolie as Thena probably takes the cake.
It'll be interesting to see how the film works in Black Knight, as we only got a tiny snippet of him here.
I hope we can avoid any wink/nod style reference to Gemma Chan's prior MCU role and just focus on her character in this film.
I found the teaser... interesting... but a bit weird. It's hard to explain but that kind of mystical secret history stuff seemed more organic and less off-putting in Black Panther.
Partly, it might be because I've been recently binging a podcast called Our Fake History, and the premise of the Eternals sounds suspiciously like the "Magicians of the Gods" theory by crackpot pseudohistorian Graham Hancock
, which the podcast spends a lot of time debunking.
I bring up Black Panther in part because Prester Jon is also covered in the podcast, and the the idea of Prester Jon's location moving around (something Klaw brings up in the movie) is more like an analysis of pseudohistory than engaging in pseudohistory.

that does track for Xavier
Jack Kirby was seemingly a huge fan of the chariots of the gods type thing considering how often it comes up in his creations

Forever liveblogging the Avengers@Known Unknown- As I understand it, the two are related. Like calling the lost, advanced culture "Magicians of the Gods" is obviously reminiscent of the Ancient Aliens "Chariots of the Gods".
I don't inherently mind comic books using it as an inspiration (for instance, there's definitely a lot of it in the presentation of Asgard), but the teaser for Eternals plays it so straight that I find it a bit off-putting.

Eh? I don't see how that would make sense.
