Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

That's probably the best way it could be put. He really has to be there, it'd be wrong if he wasn't, just not as much as he has been recently.

Disney100 Marathon | DreamWorks MarathonMy exact thoughts, him giving orders and consulting with his students from time to time but still leaving the spotlight on the students should be a good enough compromise
Prettiest Meta Knight Gijinka, nglThis, basically.
Sure, he's the first villain they faced, but any mutant using their powers for evil (and there have been a lot of those) could fill the role just as well.
As a physical threat, sure. Philosophically however the relationship between Xavier and Magneto, their similarities and differences, is the crux of the X-Men's (admittedly strained) racism metaphor. Without him the whole mutant conflict is significantly simpler and IMO duller.

Same here. Original trilogy was nothing more than Magneto's shapeshifting Dragon and the reboot series morphed her into some kind of bizarre OOC mutant icon. We really haven't had that much of the actual Mystique in film form yet.

Cyclops, probably THE poster boy of Ron the Death Eater in modern day comic history.

He and Magneto are two sides of what's supposed to be a sociopolitical debate and yet most modern sentiment paints Xavier's dream as moderate milquetoast garbage from a privileged hypocrite. I've seen quite a number opine for Jonathan Hickman's X-Men to be the new status quo, not coincidentally one where Xavier realizes his dream is bullshit and works instead to give Magneto more or less what he wants.
To be fair, Xavier always had a manipulative streak, from his very conception on. He also had some......problematic feelings towards Jean.
He never was a white knight, that image came with the films and Patrick Stewart's portrayal.

True, the problem is Magneto is the biggest Draco in Leather Pants of the entire Marvel universe, and the better Magneto gets the more Xavier gets dragged into Ron the Death Eater in response.

I can't laugh at that joke as I normally would.
I guess this talk of downplaying Xavier has gotten to me a little. Like I said, I can totally get why some would want things that way (especially since Charles has had pretty good portrayals across the board, barring missteps here and there while other characters still need a more accurate showing), but it still irks me.
.....Lockheed is cool though.
