Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Not to mention Black Panther actually bombed hard in China, where everywhere else it became an unexpected pop cultural juggernaut beyond its status as an MCU entry.
Disney100 Marathon | DreamWorks MarathonHonestly this is great news. Might force the MCU (at least, preferably Disney as a whole) to stop bowing down to a government committing active genocide.
Just make Shang Chi a love letter do free Hong Kong. DO IT, YOU ABSOLUTE COWARDS.

Actually, no it didn't
— its pull dropped hard
after a week, but it still earned $100M for the mouse. The international box office was like $600M.

Alright, fair enough. But from what I've seen they still actually hated it, with some reviews having some pretty... unfortunate language regarding why.
Maybe that's why they want to ban Eternals. One of the leads is part of a same-sex couple.

I don't know about that. I have always thought the 'no diversity bc China :'(' thing is partially a Mis-blamed situation. China will censor what they want; it's the down-home Americans they don't wanna offend.
I am guessing that the fact that the director has spoken out against the CCP is the genuine reason. It's not even an Eternals thing, Nomadland sweeping the Oscars was met with crickets. (EDIT: Not just that, it was straight up censored.)

Maybe a combo of the two: pro-gay and openly critical of the CCP.
Disney100 Marathon | DreamWorks MarathonI have found nothing to suggest Shang-Chi was intended for the Chinese audience, which is especially apparent given the movie is clearly speaking to the experiences of the Asian diaspora, something mainland Chinese don't give a shit about. And from what I've seen of Feige he isn't the type to fly straight into All Asians Are Alike like that. If anything most of the accusations that Shang-Chi is Chinese pandering are from those assuming that a movie centering around a Chinese character must be appealing to Chinese audiences/the CCP.
It's easy to joke but Dr. Strange 2 is introducing America Chavez and will most likely pull back in Wiccan and Speed following Wandavision. They have so set themselves up for depicting homosexuality that there's going to be legit backlash if they don't commit at this point.

Simu Liu, not Tony Leung. The Chinese audience actually likes Leung; seen some takes suggest they'd rather have him as Shang-Chi. >_>
It's been said they'd like to recast her actress again when she's older right?
Well, she's much older now.
One Strip! One Strip! There are two FoX-Men actresses that I'm absolutely on board with having reprise their characters as MCU versions a la J. K. Simmons, and it's Dafne Keen as X-23 and Anya Taylor-Joy as Magik. Those are the one's I'd legit be kinda upset to see recasted.
(Both versions of Xavier and Magneto were perfectly casted but unfortunately McAvoy and Fassbender are too young and Stewart and McKellen are most likely too old to do the franchise loop again, so I've contented myself with seeing them recasted.)
The problem is you kind of need Xavier for the X-Men. He's their founder. So he has to play some part in it.

Fan-Preferred Couple cleanup threadWell, Xavier isn't usually the leader, he's the founder. He's even more important than the leader.
One thing they could do to adapt X-Men without either Xavier or Magneto is make both of them Posthumous Characters who did some cool stuff in the past but are long dead and now their legacy lives on.

The irony is making your product to appeal directly to a foreign audience is missing the point.
They love your movies exactly because of how different they are. Making your movies to be more like there’s won’t impress them, cause they already have movies like that where they live.
