Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Squirrel Girl as a full on Silver Age satire movie sounds fun.

Or for a more moviegoing audience (in the same way Deadpool ended up a parody of modern action movies), make Squirrel Girl's movie a parody of more traditional superhero movies like the classic Raimi Spidey films or (more recently) something like Aquaman or Wonder Woman.

Thunderbolts are akin to the Suicide Squad of DC though

The Thunderbolts usually aren't forced on the team and are their of their own free will. They're also usually villains trying to reform or anti-heroes.

Yeah. Anyone expecting a Thunderbolts movie to be anything like a Suicide Squad film plotwise is liable to be disappointed.

The only way I could see them being similar if is the MCU specifically reimagined the concept to be just like the Suicide Squad to cash in on that movie's... er... "success"... and I can't imagine why they would do such a thing.

I'm really leaning to using the Dark Avengers identities cause I find the idea of supervillains forced into government owned identities of already existing superheroes really cool.

Hell they could hire Vulture to be Falcon now.

On the topic of sentry, I'm going to hold judgement on the idea until we see how Moonknight pans out. Media has enough botched portrayals of Dissociative Identity Dissorder.

Quicksilver'd, eh?

Anywho, it looks great - and that in itself is wonderful, seeing as you just know movie magic is going to make it look even better.

Oh my god, her costume looks incredible. It's so comics accurate, too! I cannot wait to see it in the show proper!

[up]Stretching and elongating the body is traditionally the toughest effect to do on the big screen and not look dumb. But considering how they nailed the costume...so far so good.

Yeah, I would say that Reed Richards' stretching has never looked good across all the FF films.

I think Kamala's powers are aided by the fact they're often drawn to be deliberately cartoonish-looking (obviously reminiscent of looney tunes characters inflating their own limbs), so looking a bit silly is within its purview.

Yeah, Kamala mostly doesn't "stretch" in the classical sense, she rather enlarges her body parts.

[up]So even if this gets nailed, I’m still worried about how One Piece will look.

It’s shown in early Ms Marvel that her power is more full shapeshifting in that she can fully transform her body to look like someone else or into a couch I think?

The shrinking and growing parts of herself is just what she chooses to focus on

Would there be much of a backlash if they altered her powers?I could them doing minimizing the stretching and squashing to focus on her other powers

But its her powers. You don't really change that stuff like what the Arrowverse originally did with the Atom.

Shapeshifting in general is such a terribly difficult thing to animate in live action - even less physical stuff like constructs tend to be hit or miss.

Though the last two shows make me optimistic about how much resources the show will have compared to a more normal television budget.

I like how the MCU has been studiously averting the Not Wearing Tights almost since his beginning. It took some time for Clint and Wanda but they got/will get there eventually.

I thought that Kamala being able to shapeshift was a case of in-universe Early-Installment Weirdness, during which her powers allowed to do more than what they would do for some time after the terrigenesis.

I've been assuming that Kamala doesn't do Mystique style morphing into someone else because she finds it disturbing.

Yeah, I think the only time she actually shapeshifted to look like another person was in the beginning when she emerged from the terrigenesis cocoon looking like Carol Danvers. And then a little later she was trying to shapeshift into looking like someone else and ended up shapeshifting into her mom. [lol]

I feel like she's, esp in the latest run, done some active shapeshifting (as opposed to sizeshifting) of her hands and stuff but I could be misremembering.

When we're done, there won't be anything left.
