Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Aaron's run had this great moment where Loki tries to claim the title of Sorcerer Supreme and the human (-esque) wizards just laugh at his face. They point out that mortals and gods can both technically wield magic but humans have to sacrifice their sanity and physical health in insane schemes to channel divine power that can turn them to mush and make faustian bargains with eldritch powers just to get a flicker of power. Gods are just born with natural magic and bypass all those difficulties, so they basically are like privileged kids who don't know the half of it of how "real" magic is cast.
Later on Strange and Loki have a magic duel of sorts and the difference is illustrated with Loki being Unskilled, but Strong while Strange obviously has a much keener knowledge of the darker pathways of magic.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."Seemed to me MCU!Loki was not a particularly powerful magic user. I don't think we have seen him do anything else than casting illusions, apart from a brief bout of telekinesis when he learns about his mother's death, though that could have been an illusion too. Then there was him getting owned by Strange, but I see this as the magical equivalent of a sucker punch anyway.
Whatever your favourite work is, there is a Vocal Minority that considers it the Worst. Whatever. Ever!.In Thor: The Dark World, Loki was told by one of the guards that his mother was dead and that's how he learned about it. Granted, the scene didn't have any dialogue, but we do see a guard talking to him and Loki brushing him off before he destroys his cell.
EDIT: My mistake, I thought you meant telepathy. I had a brain fart

Telepathy: communicating mind to mind
Telekinesis: moving objects with your mind
Telephonesis: growing a phone out of your head
Depending on when the Falcon and Winter Soldier takes place, he could also be thinking of the events of Wandavision as well.
It's a fantastic bit of irony that Loki is one of the least effective magic users in the MCU. The bit where Dr. Strange just instantly clowns him (with the first and presumably easiest spell he ever learned, to boot) is gold.
He had to multi class as a rogue and kept being dragged away from magic lessons to go on adventures with Thor
Granted he can turn into a snake. Haven’t seen Strange do that
Forever liveblogging the AvengersFrigga seemed to have been a warrior first, otherwise she would probably have fought Malekith with a couple of well placed spells. Anyway at this stage magic in the MCU was not very developed and Asgardian magic was still trying to pass as some kind of sufficiently advanced science.
Whatever your favourite work is, there is a Vocal Minority that considers it the Worst. Whatever. Ever!.Asgardians just don't have much need to be that proficient at magic considering their superhuman physiques. Loki and Frigga seem to mostly shapeshifting and illustion crafting with some mild transmogrification (like how Loki often materializes his knives out of thin air) to complete their natural fighting.
In the comics Loki is a better sorcerer (though not on Strange's level of knowledge, if a great level of sheer power), but he still simply just doesn't need to be that complex and most Asgardians don't either.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."MCU Asgardian magic is more akin to artificers than typical wizardry. In the early days of the MCU, they were still Doing In the Wizard in regards to magic, so they were very evasive in giving the Asgardians excessively supernatural magical powers rather than sci-fi stuff with a medieval flair. There are exceptions, like Loki's illusions and the casket of winter, but they're few.
So now that they're really trying to delve into the magical world, I like that they made it explicit that Loki's "only really does semi-shapeshifting illusions sometimes" magic is laughably underwhelming even in-universe.

Drax tried stabbing and cutting him a few times without much luck
Also that whole “all that for a drop of blood” moment
Forever liveblogging the AvengersAs per Disney, Black Widow is still targeted for May 7 release, only in theaters
.
Get me a vaccine with every bucket of popcorn and I'll be there. Otherwise...I think that's an overly optimistic timetable.
Disney and Warner both shooting themselves in the foot. Ya hate to see it.
