Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Presumably this will be the end of the high-school trilogy.

Correct me if I'm wrong but this would also be the last Spidey in the MCU movie that can be made without renewing the deal, right?

[up] I think? Sony and Marvel ironed out a last-minute deal that gives Spidey one more solo movie to wrap up the loose ends established in FFH and an appearance in a non-specified ensemble Marvel movie. Some are speculating it might be Multiverse of Madness, I think. Captain Marvel 2 was also thought of. Again, I think.

So given that the high school era is about to be done and Jon Watts is going on to direct the MCU Fantastic 4 movie, who do we think is an ideal pick to direct Spidey's adventures in college?

I doubt the deal won't get renewed after this film gets to nearly a billion again.

[up][up] I'd say someone who is't the directorial equivalent of Joe Qaesada, let Peter be the next Tony Stark and have a healthy relationship with Michelle without Faustian demons scheming to ruin it.

Anyway I have an idea on how to bring in mutants into the MCU, phasing them in a few at a time like an earlier post mentioned...but also have them be the result of Hulk's snap, that his use of the Infinity Gauntlet resulted in something being changed in some of the people he brought back, resulting in what were otherwise ordinary humans suddenly returning from oblivion with new powers.

Would also explain why the public would fear them to the point of right-wing Irrational Hatred. As they suddenly popped into existence when Hulk used the gauntlet.

Alternatively, have Tony's use of the gauntlet and the Avengers' adventures int he timestream create a ripple effect far into the past where a similar strain of humanity of another dimension (named Amenth) appeared on earth during a bygone age. And the leader of this group of empowered extra-dimensional humans would be Apocalypse and his wife, Genesis. Resulting in mutants being ushered in by the infinity gauntlet and/or the Timey-Wimey Ball.

EDIT: correcting a mistake pointed out [down]

My theory on mutants is to have the mutant gene always been around, but their powers had been intentionally suppressed since ancient times. The suppression wasn't 100% effective, so mutants have occasionally popped up throughout history, but so infrequently that they have mostly been able to fly under the radar and no one has been able to study them enough to conclusively determine the genetic link between these individuals with extraordinary abilities.

The suppression is then fully broken, either incidentally (which could be one of the snaps), or deliberately (such a reverse "no more mutants"). Which leads to everyone with the mutant gene developing powers over the course of the next few years.

This allows for both historical mutants where it's especially important for the character's backstory and a big modern population of mutants, while at the same time keeping it relatively plausible that they've managed to slip under the radar. Basically you can explain away a Woverine, a Mageneto, and a Xavier not coming up before, but you can't explain away so many superpowered individuals that even a small town of under 2000 people will probably have at least a couple of them.

Yeah. I don't see the deal not being renewed. Plus after this film MCU Spider-mam has one more MCU appearance/ So I can understand a break, but he's not done for good. At least not yet.

Seeing a lot of people upset on Twitter that No Way Home is being released to theaters as opposed to streaming or day-to-date.

First, quit being a spoiled brat and get vaccinated if you want this pandemic to end.

Secondly, wow talk about privilege as if everyone in America and the world has internet access.

Did we see a release date for NWH? I think theaters may be able to open again by the fall if vaccination programs move ahead at a decent pace.

[up][up][up] It's not exactly unreasonable to be upset that - in an instance where there is a deadly plague that makes aggregating with other people problematic - media is being released in a venue that requires aggregation.

Vaccinations are slow, and many people won't be able to get vaccinated for some time. Telling people to shut up and get vaccinated is a pointless counter, given that while some are no doubt avoiding vaccination by choice, many others simply cannot be vaccinated yet and need to wait.

This is even more pronounced internationally and in poor communities. Just like not everyone in the world has internet access, not everyone in the world is going to be able to get vaccinated in a timely matter. If anything, due to the way distribution has worked thus far: those two camps are liable to be the same communities.

I don't think I've seen a single timetable for vaccination that posited that everyone will be vaccinated and fine by winter. The general consensus is that even assuming every dose is delivered right away, you won't start seeing a majority vaccination until next year.

This is because vaccines existing and theoretically being available in general, and everyone having realistic access to vaccines, are not the same.

I posted in the COVID thread that I think end of year 2021 is the *optimistic* guess for easing of pandemic restrictions for the US. This is assuming vaccination seriously ramps up over the summer, and no freaky mutant strains render all the effort moot. So a theatrical release is plausible by then.

But to put it into perspective, my country, the Philippines, hasn't even started vaccinating healthcare workers, let alone the greater population. "Shut up and get vaccinated" is not an option for many people around the world.

The theater industry can't stay locked down forever. It will open up in areas that have high vaccination rates and sustained reduction in cases. Some people will be left behind, but I don't see any realistic way to prevent that.

We also have the Box Office and COIVD threads for further discussion. As it is, vaccination plans are kinda off-topic unless Marvel changes the release plan for any of their films because of them.
