Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Aaron on a huge Phoenix bend, it’s like he has a fetish for firebirds.

The run has his creator pets, the Avengers BC which includes the first host of the Phoenix shagging Odin who he considers the love of his life now and the current arc is a Phoenix tournament where it randomly gathers various characters to find a new host with apparently no involvement from the Grey family who was originally its greatest hosts.

Funnily enough it’s made the recent reveal in the King in Black event even more well received cause it’s using a different less used God figure than the now overused Phoenix plus being pretty clever.

[up][up][up] Still the last thing you expect from Moon Knight is taking over New York and summoning a giant pyramid base as he tortures Black Panther to........ steal his powers....

Yeah and at the end Moon Knight grumps back off to beat up people in alleyways

It took him right out of his comfort zone and he hated it

And thank god Jean isn’t participating. I only wish Wolverine wasn’t. If Aaron has any bigger fetish than his firebird one it’s for Future Wolverphoenix

I feel like we're getting off-topic to vent about the current comic books instead of the movies. We do have a thread for discussion of the comics.

When does Falcon and Winter Soldier premiere? I thought it would be the week after Wandavision's finale, so sometime around the 6th, right?

Given that the She-Hulk is going to be a courtroom dramedy, I figure there might be a little fourth wall shenanigans here and there going on. Like if Jen doubles as the narrator or something.

[up]Baymax being the cameo in Wandavision would certainly be out of left field. But how reliable is this?

Since Big Hero 6 is a Marvel thing already, I'm perfectly fine with characters from it showing up in Wandavision. Please let it be a trippy animated sequence with Baymax in his soft, squishy glory talking a bunch of scary nonsense.

The legend has returned.

Weren't the Big Hero 6 characters Exiled from Continuity around the time the movie came out?

I mean, the tie-in comic to the cartoon was licensed out by IDW. That was pretty much a sign that Marvel wasn't in much of a rush to do something with the characters again.

Yeah, even the Disney Infinity toys labeled BH 6 as "Disney originals" with no mention of Marvel.

Assuming the info is true maybe things changed. Maybe Feige requested their use and Disney always says yes to what he asks for.

I’ve heard that the comics thing is about drawing a division between demographics

Like the marvel subcontracted some other books aimed at kids to IDW I believe

Yeah! I mean, there’s nothing really stopping it

The Heroes Reborn and Marvel Knights stuff were another two times they contracted outside comic groups

It’d just be a matter of pride and whether it’s worth paying outside talent I guess

I just discovered the villain of Thor: Love and Thunder will be Gorr the God Butcher. Not sure what to make of this decision. What's the word, friends?

Power-wise he seems too similar to Hela, but it provides a good link between films. The All-Black here may just be her corpse he happens across.

As for how he'll fit into the film—eh. They have Christian Bale, so they have to have something good planned. Not sure how he'll fit with Taika's usual comedy, but I have faith.

I wonder if the MCU Big Hero 6 would draw more from the animated version or the comic version. Free synergy if they go with the animated one, but tonally out of place by a tad.

The original comics were an embarrassing mishmash of uninformed racial stereotypes where the only real positive was ironically the one the film chose to take away. Fredzilla was an Ainu who averted the regional equivalent of Magical Native American before being whitewashed into a generic white man.

[up][up]At this point, big marshmallow Baymax is pretty well known, so I see no reason why they wouldn't keep that design or ask for a slight modification from Shigeto Koyama.

That and for all the other characters, having that Baymax in the MCU would allow for a lot of great visuals.

I think folks are putting way too much stock into some unsubstantiated rumor.

I mean I like Big Hero 6, but it was hardly a massive success.

Yeah I don't believe this all that much, but as for reasons, it was enough of a critical and financial success to earn itself a spinoff continuation, and it has built-in synergy potential.

Yeah, it's about as believable as "Jennifer Lawrence Sue Storm", but unlike that rumor it's fun to muse about this one.
