Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I sincerely question her taste in men then because Namor is in no way an improvement from Reed.

There’s the barrel and there’s digging under it to the center of the Earth. Namor is at the core.

Ah Namor ya professional shit bag, always fan ragging on ya. [lol]

Hell even Doom likes to rag on Namor because he’s an idiot like during the Incursions.

Lateral move.

And Cap likes anyone that punched Nazis with him on the Invaders. And in fairness. IN FAIRNESS. That's a good thing to bond over.

The (original) Human Torch was a far more worthy ally than Namor.

He burned Hitler alive. True story.

Incredibly I think Juggernaut is the least worse of the 3.

Juggernaut was a hero when he and Jen hooked up. It isn't like she slept with the Red Skull. Though I'd argue it is objectionable on the grounds of him being her client at the time.

[up] These days, Juggernaut is arguably less shady than his brother.

It's never been her rejecting Namor because, well, Sue likes Namor a lot. Namor by contrast is an asshole but he can be a charming one. Because while he's friends (I'd say friendly than friends) with Doctor Doom, he's ALSO best friends with Captain America.

And yes, it's basically a pretty straightforward, "Reed would rather be with test tubes than his wife. Namor would rather be with his girlfriend punching Cthulhu."

So why doesn't Marvel just have her divorce the guy?

The worst I saw her do was one story where she fantasied about Namor but it was part of some plot by Doom which Reed had actually begun to counter before he started, if I remember correctly.

Ah, yes, the 1234 mini-series by Grant Morrison. Essentially Morrison's attempt at a Decon-Recon Switch for the Fantastic Four that ultimately deconstructs Doctor Doom's Noble Demon shtick.

There was also an X-Factor/Fantastic Four crossover where Doom trapped her in a dream machine where she had a fantasy about Namor. Believe it or not, this wasn't done out of malice but to protect Sue from a Dr Doom from another universe who was impersonating Reed.

Superhero comics, man.

They're the First Family tm

There's no hecking way that Sue and Reed are going to get divorced. They're like the one couple that's immune to splitting up.

And a wrinkle on the Juggernaut thing is that apparently it was an alt Jen playing tourist who hooked up with him and said Jen was dating Juggernaut in her home reality. Comic books!

[up] I get that but there is no reason they can't just write Reed as a good husband who just happens to have flaws.

Is not surprise venture brother just stright out parody him as the horrible husband he is in the series.

[up][up] Is Reed allowed to be a good anything anymore? Comics have a long history of glossing over their heroes' flaws, particularly with relationships, because "they're a hero", but my impression is that with Reed they've been leaning hard into him being all flaws.

This is a problem with Marvel's heroes, they keep giving them too many flaws and not enough positives.

How many dark secrets that make him just like Magneto does Professor X have?

Like one dark secret is being human, 20 is just being an asshole.

I'm done, I don't want to be tied to a medium that internet personalities frown upon. Between this and Disney's shenanigans, I feel content with Endgame as a finale.

[up][up][up] Why do you care so much that other people don't like it? Basing your interests solely on external approval is extremely harmful.

[up]Don't remind me. It feels awful relying on internet personalities for approval for liking something.

As for caring so much, I feel like I need a reputable source's approval to enjoy something and negativity gets more attention.

It does give me hope that in the FF movie, Reed is characterized more as a charmingly nebbish and socially awkward scientist.

Really lay in the adorkable especially between him and Sue.

Medium? You keep using that word, I do not think it means what you think it means.

"Frowning upon a medium" is like people who are snobs about watching cartoons, I don't know of anyone who thinks live-action movies/tv shows are inherently terrible, and that wouldn't have anything specifically to do with the MCU.

Dan Slott notably hated the idea Jennifer would sleep with the Juggernaut because he had very particular ideas about Jennifer being an Ethical Slut, particularly basically around the idea, "If you have tried to murder her cousin then she would never do it, which Cain Marko absolutely has on multiple occassions."

So he retconned it as a alternate universe Jenn.

Notably, this was apparently a Berserk Button for him and other writers tweeked him in their books.

Writers being Armed with Canon and retconning previous stuff they don't like is another reason I stopped reading comics.
