Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Well I doubt they’re going to bring back the reality stone so Star would be getting nerfed if it was her
Forever liveblogging the AvengersI mean, I can only speak for myself, but from my perspective: with the understanding that Marvel decided not to recast T'Challa out of respect for the actor's real-life tragic passing, I feel like the position of "bring back the main villain of the previous movie who emphatically CHOSE death as an alternative to imprisonment, pointedly closing the door on redemption or rehabilitation, so he can be the new main character" is almost disgustingly tone-deaf.
Granted, I have expressed and continue to feel that retiring T'Challa rather than recasting does a greater disservice to the franchise, but I respect Marvel's position and feel there's a pretty big meta disconnect there between Marvel's choice and the movement to bring Killmonger back.
Live action recasts don't really happen much nowadays compared to the early days of the mcu and I think anyone given the role of T'Challa would have had a Tough Act to Follow matching the one and only Boseman.
"That's right mortal. By channeling my divine rage into power, I have forged a new instrument in which to destroy you."So far in the MCU (and not including the Blip) anyone who was confirmed as dead by the end of a movie has remained dead.
even Vision is in fact technically still dead though we are only partially through that story so it may change.
"These 'no-nonsense' solutions of yours just don't hold water in a complex world of jet-powered apes and time travel."I guess there's Coulson, but we all know how AOS is dubiously canon at this point.
The MCU does have a lot of Disney Deaths in their films, but they've been mostly decent at keeping dead characters... well, dead.
EDIT: Oh, Bucky also counts as a "dead" character they brought back to life! Although to be fair, there were hints that he'd survive and everybody pretty much knew he was gonna come back as the Winter Soldier.

YOU SHUT YOUR DAMN MOUTH!!
In seriousness, yeah, no. Can't think of any honest-to-god resurrections in the definitive canon.
Taking in the shows, I think Kree blood is the only plot device that can bring people back to life. Though, it was mentioned that Carol had a blood transfusion with Yon-Rogg in Captain Marvel upon being blown up by the Tesseract, so that element could be carried over.
I mean, they probably have to have kept the corpse in good condition for it to work, so...

The question will be if they do release it in theaters will it do anywhere close to the numbers they were originally hoping for. Pre-pandemic you were looking at 300 million domestic, 600 million global to be considered a success. Even if the pandemic is mostly behind us, if they release it in theaters only and it only makes 300 million global all that waiting served little to no purpose. A movie of that scale has a lot of money tied up that they can't pay off without a proper release.
That was the driving factor for Warner Brothers to make the theatrical and HBO Max split, you are likely taking a loss no matter how you slice it so they are looking at maximizing the alternative value of the movie in some way.
Comics are just words and pictures. You can do anything with words and pictures.
