Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

You can even Race Lift Frank Castle and let his loved ones be victims of corrupt racist cops. But because All Cops Are Bastards, they won’t do anything about it, and Frank decides to take matters into his own hands.

Though that would bring its own can of worm, I’m sure. But it’s worth thinking about.

We honestly live in such a sensitive world, that if they decide to turn a violent antihero like Frank Castle into a black person, a lot of people will complain that he is an "offensive stereotype" to black people.

Ironically, those who complain about it will be white people, while black persons would do not care or even will love the character.

There are things you can do with the character, but a lot of them get away from the Ennis “Numba 1 Bestest Ever Badass Normal who hunts all criminals” they will inevitably cause controversy. The Netflix show got complaints for this, the constant battle between Frank Castle, a guy who wanted to just sink into the background and never be bothered again, and the Punisher, an ideal of vengeance, when if it was a pure Ennis interpretation, Frank Castle would never have a say. So make of that what you will.

Guy who kills racists because his family was killed by them is Nighthawk from the supreme power universe

There was a black punisher spin-off guy but he used non lethal instead of killing everyone

How do you non lethally punish criminals exactly? Stare them surrendering?

That’s a weird question considering every other superhero in the entire world manages to punish criminals without killing them

But Nigel Higgins used non-lethal ordinance because he came to realize that going around killing people was pretty messed up

You just described Ghost Rider. Funnily enough, Frank was Cosmic Ghost Rider for a bit.

The Punisher without killing renders his entire raison d'etre nonsensical.

[up]That was the Mangaverse Punisher, written by someone who hated Frank. That Punisher was a geisha who tortured her foes rather than killed.

Deadpool has no problem killing people. Even Hawkeye did it for a bit. If Punisher comes into the MCU and uses non-lethal methods, that would completely neuter the character concept.

Don't the heroes already kill badguys ?

Not sure why Punisher doesn't need to if he enters the MCU

What I and others are objecting to is someone’s bizarre definition of “punishing” meaning “has to involve killing.”

No one is talking about how the Punisher shouldn’t kill.

That someone has a name

Anyway,your post read

"Do you seriously think “punishing” means “killing”?

To which I responded

"Well yes actually,in the case of a guy with a skull for a symbol that makes it quite clear

"A death sentence is a thing, ergo punish them to death"

Punishing someone does not automatically mean death, buuut in the case of character named 'The Punisher' it generally does, the guy is probably named after castle doctrine, which as you know is a law that makes it legal to kill trespassers as an act of self defence but I don't know this likely true or a happy coincidence

You can ask that about anyone who wrote a character or series they hate. They still get paid, even if the product isn't gonna be very good.

[up]x4 - Part of me wonders if it's writers deliberately trying to offset Ennis's portrayal.

[up]That would be the easiest thing to do.
