Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I'd give Angel feather manipulation powers like Hawks from My Hero Academia.

A step above just shooting them as knives as he was psychic over every single feather which he can use to do shit like saving a bunch of people at once freefall or using feather clubs.

Or even swords.

God only knows how that works, but hey.

I'm up for Cyclops getting focus as well, much as I miss the fact Colossus, Nightcrawler and Wolverine were never buddies in the movies as they are in the comics.

I do wish Krakoa shows up at some point in the MCU.

I suppose they could incorporate a bit of his Archangel abilities with the feather knives.

Oddly enough, I'd say his appearances in Evolution (where he never got to Archangel) and Wolverine and the X-men did a good job of making plain angel look cool.

At the least he must be incredible fast, so have him going around, drawing the attention of other enemies and maybe flying punch them in the back of the head if he's got enough room to move.

This may be a crazy thing to do, but if Mystique, Beast, Nightcrawler, the Thing, or another character with "weird" appearance do find a romantic partner, be people who are not blind and know their true forms.

I honestly want them to avoid the classic trope of Blind and the Beast.

Shouldn't be hard for Kurt to find a partner.

The guy is adorable.

[up]Kurt’s Chick Magnet properties are something that never came up in any adaptation. The 1992 series and movie mostly focused on his faith, Evolution made him kind of an idiot, etc.

Kurt is one of the biggest playboys in Marvel comics, he's gonna be fine.

Also Kurt's appearance tends to vary greatly depending on the writer and artist.

At best he's just a handsome guy who happens to have blue skin (basically a Cute Monster Boy), and at worst he looks just as demonic as his father's.

Fox has resulted in the X-Men having the same effect that the 2000's show gave the Teen Titans, or years of samey movies gave Superman's rogues gallery: the general public thinks there's only the small amount of characters with only the small amount of plots between then, despite there being a huge wellspring of content left unused.

So yeah, I'd be down for them to do more characters who we haven't gotten the chance to see (or whom we have seen, but have barely gotten much focus or development in previous adaptation) when we inevitably get X-Men stuff in the MCU, and sides of their mythos that haven't been adapted yet. It's something I liked about Deadpool, and I hope to see more of it.

re:Angel, remember that the Falcon is a similar character whose only superpower is that "he flies", and he gets away with it because even without the wings, he's a very good combatant. So, you might just give Warren Worthington III the same powers as his original, pre-Archangel self, but make him a more competent fighter.

On further thought, Rahne Sinclair's character is that of a very religious person with a shit ton of shame and guilt over her powers.

So the possibility that she would be sexualized and fetishized for the powers she greatly despises would be quite the experience for her.

[up] Similarly, though Nightcrawler is a lot more comfortable with his appearance (in the comics anyway), he's also a very religious person, which means he'd probably try to rein in his more playboy-ey tendencies (no premarital sex and all).

I assume this about Destiny and Alicia, but both of those guys learn what their partner looks like pretty early on.

I'd be annoyed if either of them got cut, because they've never had the best luck in adaptations.

Also, even though Alicia is blind, even she knows what Ben Grimm looks like. After all, she's a sculptor who relies on touch a lot, and given that the Thing's numerous anatomical irregularities, and that Alicia makes a lot of sculptures of him, she's sure to have noticed.

Speaking of the Thing's love life, while I know the comics likely can't mention it directly, have they ever hinted how Ben's transformation affected him ... y'know ... down there?

He drinks and eats so he must defecate and urinate like everyone else. And, 2015 movie aside, he's never seen pantsless that I know of, so odds are he has something to keep hidden down there.

Ben being Ben, if he were a Ken doll made of rock he'd constantly angst about that too. Not that I'd blame him.

This was already answered by the late Stan Lee himself back in 2011.

Vanity Fair: Spidey Bites: Stan Lee’s Secret for Saving Spider-Man the Musical? More Stan Lee!

"Is the Thing’s dork made out of orange rock like the rest of his body?”

I never gave it a thought. I guess common sense would say it was made of orange rock too, but I always thought it was more interesting to think about Reed Richards. As you know, he had the ability to stretch, and sexually, that would seem to be a great asset in many areas. But I’ve got to tell you a funny thing about Mallrats.

So yes, Ben has a rock penis. And Reed has a rubber penis.

It'd be awkward as hell if Stan had said Ben had no dick, as Ben was basically Kirby's avatar.
