Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

If anything, I think over-the-top, cheery America Saves the Day propaganda pieces of WWII, like First Avenger is at certain points, are disrespectful towards the real deal.

I remember The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes had a similar depiction of WWII, where it was framed as a war between the Allies and HYDRA, completely removing the Axis Powers from the show. I think one of the creators had to say that the Nazis still existed in the show's continuity, it's just that they couldn't really depict them in a children's show without setting off the censors.

Of course, that argument doesn't really apply to a PG-13 film.

The Justice League animated series basically pushed Hitler and the Nazis back offscreen for its World War II story, then pulled them back for history to reassume its offscreen course as soon as the more apolitical and fantastical Vandal Savage was dealt with.

Arguably, in its own way skipping the Nazis altogether every time, just because you want to sell more toys, is bad as well because in the name of corporate greed you're erasing reminders of the true nature of the past and making a serious conflict with ugly implications that never need being forgotten into another fantasy stock conflict but with uniforms and weapons of the era.

So what would you guys consider the least and most rewatchable MCU movies? For me, it's Iron Man 2 for the former and The Winter Soldier for the latter.

The legend has returned.

[up]I honestly don't rewatch movies. I watch thegm once and will only rewatch them again if I have completely forgotten the contents of the movie, though, honestly, I would assume that infinity war would be the most rewatchable for me

Personally the most rewatchable is Thor: Ragnarok.

And the least rewatchables are Thor 1 and 2.

It was one Hell of a glow up, gotta say.

My most rewatched MCU film is most likely The Winter Soldier, and my least rewatched one is The Dark World. The latter is just to boring in my opinion to rewatch.

My most rewatched is probably Iron Man 2, because noticing and laughing at everything bad about the movie is fun. Least rewatched is... well, I've rewatched most of the rest of the movies exactly zero times and have no desire to, but if I had to pick one I disliked specifically and would not rewatch it would be Infinity War, because Like You Would Really Do It turned out to be an accurate prediction for Endgame and seeing the story put so much weight on the Snap would be odd.

Well if didn't build-up the Snap it wouldn't feel as major as it did.

Just because it got reversed doesn't erase how shocking the whole thing is.

It's shocking, yes, but because it got reversed it doesn't have a lot of rewatch value after Endgame.

[up]x6 You and I are completely different in that regard. I rewatch movies constantly. Then again I also rewatch tv shows constantly, replay games constantly, reread books constantly. Perhaps that's a me thing. My favorite MCU movie to rewatch is probably Civil War (probably cause it's my favorite MCU movie).

Winter Soldier or Civil War. Both have fast-moving plots, great fights, and strong character moments. I’d give Winter Soldier the edge; I’ve rewatched it enough times I’ve lost count.

If I'm gonna rewatch a film it'll mainly be for the flashy action setpieces moreso than the story.

So most rewatchable, maybe Ant-Man and the Wasp. I can never get enough of that big three-way battle/car chase at the end of the film, and the stuff before it is entertaining enough to keep me interested.

Least rewatchable... Thor 2 or Captain Marvel. Neither has particularly engaging setpieces to me.

I've probably rewatched the Ant-Man movies the most. I think the least rewatchable movie technically speaking would be the Incredible Hulk since no one seems to particularly like that movie, while Iron Man 2 is probably close.

Incredible Hulk still stands as my least-watched Marvel film at 0 watches. tongue

I'd like to see it some day just to check it off my list, but based on what I've heard I'm not in a particular rush.

My most re-watched is probably Guardians 2 or Ragnarok, just because they're absolutely delightful, colorful and well-acted while also having some real thematic and character depth that resonates with me a lot. Infinity War is also up there, though that's more because of the aesthetic, action and performances than it being that good of a movie. Style over substance and all.

My least-watched is a tie between Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2/3, Thor 1/2, and Winter Soldier since I've seen them all once each. Though in terms of what I'd watch again, poor ol' Hulk is definitely at the bottom of the list.

Whose Ethan Hawke playing ?

Moon knight doesn't really have much of rogues gallery. His Arch enemy and most iconic foe is Bushman whose uh black. So I doubt that would be played by Ethan.

We don't know yet. But since Bushman is black, I rather doubt it'd be him.

Maybe a rebooted Nuke? ...Or Dracula? wink

Jokes aside, Marvel does like swapping bad guys around even in the movies, Ghost (and Kang) have probably never crossed paths with Ant-Man until his movies.

EDIT: We're getting Flag-Smashers in TFATWS. Sorry.

I feel like the Incredible Hulk is definitely the least rewatchable for me, but not because it's the worst movie in terms of quality. I think it boils down to the unlucky one-two punch of recasting Edward Norton/Disney buying Marvel while the distribution rights stayed with Universal makes it feel like the movie you least need to watch. If the same issues had befallen Thor or Captain America's first movies instead, we'd be having the same conversation.

Honestly, if it wasn't for Ross coming back in Civil War/Infinity War (and with the lack of interaction he has with Banner I genuinely feel like you could have replaced him with any generic overly-obstructive government figure to exactly the same effect), the film would almost feel like it got soft-rebooted out of continuity. I don't really think you need to watch Incredible Hulk to understand where he's at in Avengers any more than you need to watch the 2003 Hulk to understand the Incredible Hulk. Maybe that'll change with Abomination and the new Mark Ruffalo Hulk both set to show up in She-Hulk (though since it's slated to be more comedically oriented I'm not entirely sure), but I don't think Incredible Hulk is the worst MCU movie as much as it's the least connected MCU movie, and that makes it feel the most skipworthy, if that makes any sense.

I haven't really rewatched any of the Marvel movies. Except for Thor, I've seen that about four times.

But that's more or less a consequence of Tv Tropes providing me with an ever growing list of stuff to watch, play or read. tongue

I don't really think there's any film in the MCU that I wouldn't rewatch. Maybe The Incredible Hulk because of how isolated it is from the rest of the movies, but I'd still watch it if I'm in the mood.

I tend to watch the MCU films whenever they're on TV, so I've seen a lot of the Phase One and Two films multiple times. For Phase Three, the only ones I haven't rewatched are Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Thor: Ragnarok, Ant-Man and the Wasp, and Spider-Man: Far From Home. Not because I disliked those films, but simply because I haven't made the time to give them another watch.

My most watched is easily The Winter Soldier; it's very consistently engaging the whole way through, both the action segments and the quieter moments. Thor Ragnarok, The Avengers, Iron Man 1, and the first Ant-Man are also common rewatch films. As incredible as Black Panther is, it's also a much heavier film that I need to sit down and watch from beginning to finish, and thus I've only gone back to it once or twice. Chadwick Boseman's untimely death also makes it harder these days.

My least-watched films would be Thor: The Dark World and Doctor Strange, just because I found both films incredibly unengaging, the former laughably dull while the latter was so narratively sterile that I had zero motivation to finish it even the first time around. TDW has the slight edge in this regard because at least a couple of the scenes were funny enough, like the Worthy Coatrack or Loki-as-Cap, while I can't think of any moment in Doctor Strange that was good enough to make me go back (and I was spoiled on the Dormammu scene, which doesn't have enough else past the shock value to make me revisit even that moment).
