Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I mean, I should have figured since they made Samuel L. Jackson look like he's time travelled from the 1990's in Captain Marvel, but still, it's impressive how he managed to sound so different.

The legend has returned.

I'd hope so. Aren't they slated to be thirty minutes each? That'd be a way short series.

If they follow the Mando example the eps range to about 40-45 minutes each, some longer some shorter depending on the plot of the ep.

Seems like they have learned from the Netflix Shows and focusing on a fewer tightly plotted eps rather than stretching the plot out to cover 13-15 eps.

She-Hulk is a premise I can see extending for multiple seasons (given the Wacky Case of the Week tone of the comics) so we’ll see how its story compares to the other new Marvel shows (which may have more compact premises.)

Looked it up. Yeah. It's a thirty minute series. Says so in that article, even.

Written well, She-Hulk has every right to be comedy gold.

You know what I just thought of, what would've been cool? Obadiah Stane being connected to the hit on Tony's parents. Not necessarily being part of HYDRA himself or paying them to do it, just having knowledge of it and profiting off of it and this being retroactively revealed in Civil War. Would've served as a great connection to the earlier MCU.

It was strongly implied in the first film, and the new information doesn't explicitly deconfirm that.

I recall way back when I watched the original movie after all the stuff with Hydra infiltrating shield had become well known that I considered that Stane may have been part of Hydra.

I believe at the time most said that it likely wasn't the case.

.....I think it was on this thread. It may have been on a different forum.

Its easy to assume that HYDRA most likely wanted an 'in' to Stark Industries, Stane was a perfect way to get that, and for all we know they were the other side in several (if not all) of the undertable deals that got Stark Weapons into the hands of terrorists. And in order to get more weapons, as well as some control over the whole company wouldn't have STOPPED any plans to allow Stane to get majority control.

Irony would be if post Ao U Tony tracked down how his weapons were involved with the death of the Twins Parents only to find out it was Stane selling the things to a Hydra shill and they joined up with the very organization that ACTUALLY killed their parents.

I'd imagine Stane probably had no problem working with Hydra, but wasn't actually one of them. As an amoral war profiteer, it makes sense to me that he'd be selling them tech and not giving a damn about the consequences as long as it doesn't impact him personally.

It has been noted Stane's speech in Iron Man 1 feels distinctily Hydra-like:

Namely:

A new generation of weapon with this [the arc reactor] at its heart. Weapons that will help steer the world back on course, put the balance of power in our hands. The right hands.

The fact he speaks on plural in particularly is interesting given Obadiah was a solo player in the first Iron Man movie. In context he's presumably speaking about war profiteers in general but you could easily read that as HYDRA.

I always took the fact Stane never brags about killing Howard during confrontation with tony as evidence he had nothing to do with that, though, particularly since he doesn't shut up during that whole fight and brags about basically everything else. I could even see Obadiah legitimately having some level of fondness for Howard as a Pet the Dog moment for his character.

I agree that Stane probably had a bit of fondness. Plus Howard wasn't exactly unwilling to be a war profiteer.

It's very likely Stane had some sort of connection to Hydra, but given that Shield wasn't formalized quite yet (you can argue they had gone under several different restructurings over the years) that Stane was probably more of a splinter group that Hydra had indirect contact with but not an actual "Heil Hydra" type agent. Thus Stane may not have been personally responsible for the Stark's murder but aware it was not a car crash.

I think it's possible given Howard's role in forming SHIELD that Stane had some contacts who were members of HYDRA. Now, did Stane know they were really HYDRA? I doubt it, but I think it is likely that he knew there were certain sections in SHIELD that would appreciate his more unscrupulous methods.

I think the idea of him being aware of how the Stark's died is less likely, but it makes for good fanfic fodder. Maybe Stane was the one who let it slip that Howard was trying to replicate the super-soldier serum?

I remenber when the russo brothers were invited to honest trailer of winter soldier and they response some plot hole stuff(like how stark hacking of shield in avenger didnt reveal any hydra stuff) and they said not all shield were compromised and were mostly the weapon creation deparment that was full of hydra studs.

In short, if was about making some big weapon, hydra was behind it, which led the posibility of encounter with stane.

I don’t see Wanda Vision sucking since only a few MCU properties have sucked so far and this looks too interesting.

Inhumans is the only one I'd say has truly sucked.

Granted, I haven't watched Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, or the Punisher show, and I'm sure I'm forgetting another I haven't either... So they could count too for what I know.

Iron Fist Season 1 is the other Marvel property widely agreed to be subpar in quality, but even it grew a fanbase over time, especially after the atrocious Inhuman series.

[up][up]Yeah but because this series is a first for the MCU in terms of it being a series rather than a movie and being quite unique, I am somewhat concerned.
