Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Because I was browsing another site and saw someone argue that the Red Skull would've been a more compelling and sympathetic villain if they made him a Jewish SS member, and his plan was to destroy the old world so he could build a safer one for minorities like him.

Isn't that basically Magneto in his worst days anyway?

Edit: Ok wow, what a pagetopper. Adding context.

Honestly, there are lots of good ways to depict the Red Skull — as a chump bullied all his life who becomes a Nazi just to strike back against the world, as a vicious bully who becomes a Nazi because of the power it gives him over other people, as a foaming bigot who becomes a Nazi because he fervently believes in their cause, etc.

But in none of these depictions is Red Skull portrayed as sympathetic in any way, shape or form. The Red Skull has always been portrayed as a repellent bastard. And that's not a bad thing, either — a villain doesn't have to be sympathetic to be compelling.

Red skull is kinda like joker were his charms come from how much of a bastard he is instead of any deepness, they are villians like that, more style thant subtance.

"Seriously? Who comes up with ideas like this? "

I remenber reading that they were some jews in nazi army for a lot of weird reasons to bring up here, history can be pretty fucking weird here.

ICYMI: WandaVision is coming in two weeks! Are your hearts prepared?

Even more tantalizing, someone on Twitter has been doing some picture combining and what we have here is our best look at Wanda's Scarlet Witch costume! There's a lot of design cues based on Vision's costume. Fascinating.

[up]WandaVision is probably one of the few things I'm actually excited for this year so far.

Me, not so much so far. Mainly because I never really cared that much for those 2.

Well this is prolly the most experimental product out of the MCU yet.

Even if your not a fan of Wanda and Vision specifically, its still pretty exciting to figure out the madness.

I just hope that it won't make me compare it to Legion, as I doubt it can exceed that beautiful madness grin

Rumor of the day: an actor named Elijah Richardson has reportedly been cast in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier as Eli Bradley, a.k.a. Patriot.

So I'm watching Infinity War and I've been thinking, what if Quill knew ahead of time that Gamora was dead?

[up](x3)I don’t know if it’s true but it would be a surprise to see both him and Mac Chavez in the Young Avengers considering she was put in the team specifically because Eli couldn’t be used at the time due to copyright issues.

And because this show was likely in the works for years I wonder how recently the creatives on it would’ve gotten the call saying they’re allowing to use Eli again.

So I'm watching Infinity War and I've been thinking, what if Quill knew ahead of time that Gamora was dead?

He might have been a lot more reckless until someone either got him under control, or pushed him out of the way to keep him from fucking things up or letting personal beefs cloud his judgement, but on the other hand, it was finding out she was dead in the way he did, and at such a crucial moment that led to his breakdown in the first place, so if he already knew, he would have slightly less reason to flip out right then and there, because he'd have already done it.

[up] Yup. And the fact that Strange had already seen ahead and knew how the fight would go...including Peter's breakdown...and LET it happen tells me that it needed to happen.

Seriously how could have it been changed if Strange had let Peter know ahead of time about Gamora's fate?

Neat, still not very interested in the lead characters so I'm probably not watching it unless it's super groundbreaking or something.

Makes sense, with Falcon and Winter Soldier coming out so soon. I was wondering if they were going to overlap, but it looks like the answer to that is "not much."

Speaking of Wanda Vision, is there a separate thread for that? We probably want to have one to contain spoiler-y discussions if there isn't one already.

So I was looking up Endgame information and I was surprised to see that Old Steve is still Chris Evans. I could have sworn that was Clint Eastwood.

The legend has returned.
