Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

I wonder how the Gorr thing will work since the MCU version of Asgard has been totally decimnated due to the combination of Hela and Thanos (and I've heard that MCU!Hela already owes a lot to Gorr).
However, at the same time, I can see Gorr working as an Evil Counterpart because he kind of gives the sense of what Thor would be like if he took a villainous turn after experiencing devastating events, and didn't just become The Big Lebowski (sorry).
Also, it kind of struck me from reading about Gorr that he has a certian similarity with the How to Train Your Dragon 2 villain Drago Bludvist. Probably because both characters are sort of going for "evil version of Beowulf / a Classic Hero".

Gorr suffers from absolute moral myopia & is pretty much an insane son of a bitch.
It doesn't matter if some Gods aren't that bad, he still wants to kill them all because he collectively holds single God responsible for his own species wiping themselves into oblivion.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Didn't Kratos come to realize what he was doing was wrong (even if a lot of the gods were jerks) due to the massive harm it was doing to others.
Also, Gorr never seemed to consider that the reason his gods never helped him might be due to the same weapon that gave him his power. Like, you have a weapon that can kill gods, that came from a god that just got killed by another god mere moments earlier.
I don't think the story ever went into the details of why they were fighting, but it's entirely possible that all the gods of his world were trying to stop this dude from wtfpwning the universe, and then he rendered it all moot by taking the sword and going on to kill more gods.
Of course, it's also possible they were fighting for petty reasons as well. It's not really explained.

One Strip! One Strip! It would be interesting to play into that.
Especially depending on how Jane-Thor comes into power. Cause if its say Thor willingly transferring his power to save her life, Gorr would be shocked at such a selfless act of love and kindness coming from one he assumed to be purely selfish.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."There's a lot of reasons why Gorr gets deemed the God of Hypocrisy
Forever liveblogging the AvengersKang isn't the secondary villain type. He's clearly the main villain
And Eric o'Grady would make no sense as a villain messing with the Quantum realm. He's henchman level at best and he's not very bright.
Plus people seem to hate villains that have similar powers to the heroes, at least in film.

On the contrary, I think Kang fits nicely the Greater-Scope Villain role. Maybe like Dormmamu where he's basically a eldritch force in the background before a brief and inconclusive confrontation in the climax.

That would be Jason Aaron.
He probably should have come up with a better secret for Original Sin & why Thor loses his hammer.
Then again he brought back Gorr for his final Thor run, the King Thor miniseries despite it taking place billions of years after the guy originally died so presumably he does really like him.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."The statues and weird mask things at the TVA look a little like Kang, raising the possibility of some involvement from him or the Council of Kangs.
I raised the possibility of Eric in Quantumania because of the loose thread of Hydra's Pym Particles and Mitchell Carson. Though another Evil Counterpart as the Big Bad would be stupid, I agree.
Kang doesn't have to be a Greater-Scope Villain. He could just get involved because "Okay, what the hell are you morons doing to time?" and decides to stick around at The Stinger: "You know what? I like this era. Imma conquer it."
I mean, obviously not like that, but you get what I mean.

The ball is on China's court.
Disney (presumably) still wants to get these movies sold there, so until either China's society and politicians relent on the issue or Disney just calls its quits on that market we won't be seeing any major, relevant LBGT heroes whose leanings aren't easy-peasy to just cut out, much less from characters spanning major arcs through several high profile films.
I have no idea how will Eternals do it. Perhaps we'll be dealt an Onward and the whole thing is just yet another easily edited out little tease (although IIRC it was stated that wouldn't be the case). Maybe they'll go all out after all and this will be a test to see how far they can push on an obscure property before daring to push the issue with a better globally known property. And of course, we also have to see the Chinese market's reaction to Eternals. So... again, the ball's on their court.

I don't think it's only about China. They didn't even cut out the gay kiss
from The Rise of Skywalker. Public and political homophobic pressure is alive and well in America.
(Funnily enough, the most recent big example
of China censoring romance out of a Hollywood film was a straight kiss in the Mulan remake.)

At the very least hopefully we won't get "Gorr is right."
The end result of that arc was essentially Thor agreeing with the monster & leaving him depowered and impotent as a result of no longer considering himself worthy.
Which presumably won't happen here especially after everything Thor has already went through.
