Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I wonder how long it'll take to do a rendition of the Animaniacs theme song, but with lyrics relevant to what will happen in Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania.

Quantumaniacs. You know you can hear it.

Also, Chris Seavor, better known as Conker the Squirrel made a crack in light of the Fantastic Four news.

Fantastic 1 was okay, 2 and 3 a bit meh... Hopefully 4 will be better.

Try not to hear that tweet with Conker's voice! [lol]

.... I don't think it will ever happen but also I really want American Kaiju to be adapted.

They'd.... have to tweak the design.

Wait, there's another American themed Iron Man evil knockoff? Besides Norman's Iron Patriot?

I'm surprised too. Now that I think about it, I remember seeing someone on Reddit suggesting it as Hammer's Thunderbolt identity and I kind of thought they made it up at the time.

But I think it would work really well, despite the caveat that it probably makes for a pretty similar story as the one in the Falcon and Winter Soldier show (I say probably because it depends on how evil U.S. Agent is in that show, but same basic idea of a "morally iffy substitute being promoted through an advertising campaign).

US Agent isn’t usually portrayed as completely evil, just a Jerk with a Heart of Gold who nevertheless thinks he’s more important than he is.

I've been assuming since the start that US Agent is basically the main villain.

Armor Wars: Figured Rhodey would get a show eventually, and based on one of my favorite Iron Man arcs. Neat!

Makes sense Tony's armor tech might fall into the wrong hands after his death.

And it makes sense Rhodey wouldn't want that to happen.

So, wait, what's the complete line-up of MCU movies and shows? I feel like we basically have to know everything in Phase 4, as well as a few films in Phase 5 if they're hiding an Avengers from us.

My theory regarding Armor Wars is that the tech or some of it ends up falling into Victor von Doom's hands, maybe in a stinger, and he uses it to build his own suit of armor for the FF movie(s).

To put my cards on the table, I want to see U.S. Agent as the villain, so I may be making assumptions here (specifically that he'll borrow a bit from the outright villainous Burnside "Commie Smasher" Cap).

But the main reason why I figure he'll ultimately be a bad guy is that it seems (I could be wrong though) that the premise of the show is partly that U.S. Agent is the officially promoted new Cap and that there's some resistance to Sam taking up the mantle and/or he feels uncertain about it. Hence why he's wearing the Falcon costume (and is called that in the title of the show).

And I would assume the audience is not supposed to come away thinking that Walker should be Cap rather than Sam.

I was wondering what they were going to call the sequel to Ant-Man and the Wasp, since they kind of set a weird naming convention by adding a second name to the second movie's title rather than using a number or subtitle, so like were they going to stick in a third name or add a subtitle just for the third movie?

Their solution was to stick a made up word derived from "quantum" onto it, which is very on brand and I respect that.

[up][up]That Walker isn't the right fit for Captain America doesn't mean he is or has to be the main villain. Zemo is in the series too, I assume that he's probably the Big Bad.

Maybe US Agent is just a decoy villain and he's a dupe of the real Big Bad.

Perhaps even the Red Skull; they've shown they're willing to recast the character, he's still somewhere out there, and if coming back to Earth, with his nemesis gone, he might as well just taint his legacy through a replacement.

[up]x5 If they do introduce Doom, hopefully they'll make him closer to the comics than his previous movie portrayals were. Maybe update him by making Latveria an Iran-type terrorist-funder.

@PMC I think the list is something like (in rough release order):

  • Wanda Vision
  • Falcon and Winter Soldier
  • Black Widow
  • Shang-Chi
  • Eternals
  • Thor: Love and Thunder
  • Dr. Strange and the Multiverse of Madness
  • Black Panther II

There's also some projects without release dates:

  • Ironheart
  • MS. Marvel
  • Hawkeye
  • She-Hulk
  • Captain Marvel 2
  • Spider-Man 3
  • Moon Knight
  • Fantastic Four
  • Secret Invasion
  • Armor Wars

What if is also coming out next year I believe, but I don't think it'll tie into anything directly. Also, as far as I know, nothing has been labeled explicitly as "Phase Five" or anything.

To clarify, I don't think that Walker will be the main villain. I'm thinking a pawn of someone else.

Basically, I see the show ending with Sam in his Cap costume which would lead me to think that either Walker goes over the edge (villain option) or else after some kind of misunderstanding acknowledges Sam as the "rightful successor" (hero option).

Considering Walker will most likely be very authoritarian and obedient, it makes sense to have him as unwitting pawn to show him as not really a free thinker.

At worst Walker is an Anti-Hero, but he's not a villain.

Seems out of character for Doom. Doom built his own armor.

I'm gonna add in Blade, since we know it's coming eventually:

  • Wanda Vision
  • Falcon and Winter Soldier
  • Black Widow
  • Shang-Chi
  • Eternals
  • Black Panther II
  • Secret Invasion
  • Armor Wars
  • Ironheart
  • Ms. Marvel
  • She-Hulk
  • Captain Marvel 2
  • Moon Knight
  • Blade

And to contrast:

  • Thor: Love and Thunder
  • Spider-Man 3
  • Dr. Strange and the Multiverse of Madness
  • Loki
  • Fantastic 4
  • Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania

See the connection? The upcoming MCU slate has over double the number of films/series with the main character being a non-white man than the ones that do.
