Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I think Kevin Fiege said something to the effect of Dr. Strange and the Multiverse will be relevant to Spider-Man 3. Did I mishear that?

Nope. You got it right.

Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness, debuts March 25, 2022. Starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Elizabeth Olsen, Benedict Wong, Rachel McAdams={, Chiwetel Ejiofor, & Xochitl Gomez as America Chavez. Directed by Sam Raimi, the film ties to [=WandaVision & the next Spider-Man film.

Its more if they decide to do it this time, they don't half-ass it.

They might not do it this time though.

I figured they'd probably adapt the F4 before tackling any other of the Fox properties, especially the X-Men. The X-Men have a gigantic franchise with several great movies, even with the flops. The F4, on the other hand, never rose above mediocrity, and should get a chance to finally have their well-deserved spotlight.

[up][up]The FF don't bring along the huge baggage of how to integrate a whole new mutant subspecies within humanity, either. That alone makes them much, much easier to adapt into the MCU.

Indeed, the pnpy real problem would be to make richards not... hmm what would be the nice way to put it? Not as problematic as Stark?

Comic!Richards has a lot of issues with his characterization, but is not something I'm worried the movie version will carry on too.

They will probably make Reed a cute quirky nebbish scientist.

Though I'm curious whether he'll be middle-age or young.

if they race lift anyone in FF I dont want to be johnny because is the safe option: the handsome, comic relief(in the snark sense), with trouble is very typical for a black chararter.

But a black reed richards? NOW that would mean something.

Yeah, racebent Reed is the best option.

I want a Ben Grimm who resembles Jack Kirby just because The King deserves some recognition in the movies already.

It occurs to me that this is a good time for Bendis lots of his creations are getting the spotlight recently. (miles, Riri, Naomi, secret invasion)

Is his stuff just easy to adapt? How many other modern creators have had this much of their work adapted.

Reed isn’t the same kind of scientist personality wise as Tony. Reed feels more like he’s For Science! in that silver age bravado sort of way. When Reed says it’s not about the money, it’s about the science, he means it Dammit!

I know it's out of respect and everything, but it feels like a waste to just completely abandon the character of T'Challa like this. Put anyone you want to in the suit, but T'Challa is the Black Panther of the Marvel Universe, and there's still so much more to be done with him. I respect their decision and everything, but I'm still a bit disappointed there.

And given how Chadwick was thinking the movie would be a game changer and how important the character would be, I would think he wouldn't want T'Challa to die with him, and would prefer a recast too.

Bit well just my humble opinion. I too respect their decision.

Wait are they just retiring the character T'Challa or the Black Panther identity entirely?

I had my heart set on a recast too, but they made their choice. We have to respect it.

[up] Retiring T'Challa.

There is a second Black Panther movie announced, but how will they proceed beyond that is completely unknown. Not counting how badly Wright made herself look recently.

[up]x4 I think the verbiage was "we'll explore non-T'Challa characters introduced in Black Panther" but they're still calling it Black Panther 2. Presumably, either Shuri (provided her actress' anti-vax leanings are forgiven/forgotten) or another character takes up the mantle. In any case, the release date was sometime in 2022 so I assume they already have a rough idea of what the story should be.

EDIT: [up] is also an option

[up][up][up] And they just said they won't recast T'Challa. A lesser man would think Marvel Studios backed themselves into a corner, but maybe they know something we don't...
