Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Not quite. The Maggia as an organization is, essentially, Supervillain Organized Crime: a bunch of people with crazy supertech who trade crazy supertech with other criminals, and occasionally try to take over the world, led by a dude who shoots lasers out of his chest
. Think Vulture's organization in Homecoming, but an actually well run syndicate that operates on a global scale.
The best adaptation of it I think we've ween outside of the comics is - ironically - something that wasn't referred to as The Maggia at all: Kingpin's organization in the 90's Spider-Man show, which had a bit of Composite Character to it.
Most other adaptations just literally make the Maggia the real life Mafia (including its inclusion in Agent Carter), which means we've never gotten a real adaptation of the group. I'm hoping if Madame Masque does show up, it leads to an adaptation of Count Nefaria and we actually get to see them for once.

Agents of Shield didn't need that for Graviton, and he's far more FX intensive than Nefaria is.
Also: this is a Disney+ series, isn't it?
Not to mention, introducing the Maggia in this series doesn't mean it and all of its members have to be limited to this series in the first place.

Ironically, the best medium that's handled the Iron Man villains (including the MCU) in my opinion has been Iron Man: Armored Adventures.
The legend has returned. So apparently Letitia Wright (Shuri, ostensibly next in line to be Black Panther) is an anti-vaxxer:

Makes me wonder if now they'll reconsider just re-casting T'Challa. Then again, Gina Carano is a transphobe and die-hard Trump supporter, yet her Mandalorian character is as popular as ever, so who knows?
The hardest thing in this world is to live in it.Didn't know. Got thumped twice for it anyway. Am I meant to read every previous page to make sure the topic hasn't already been talked about?
This is why I don't post here very much. Everyone jumps on you for the littlest mistake. I should stick to being a viewer, not a participant

The hardest thing in this world is to live in it.Shoots lasers out of his chest is a bit of an understatement
Count Nefaria often tends to be Evil Superman
Or one of the many that Marvel has, anyway. For reasons, maybe because he was defeated by old man nihilism once, he’s not well regarded in the very limited field of “marvel’s evil supermen”
Forever liveblogging the AvengersYeah, while vaccines sound like a godsend in theory, there's always going to be hiccups. My friend recalls how the earliest flu vaccines were super experimental. (And they're Cuban Hispanic.) And yes, Ms. Wright was most definitely being irresponsible about this matter
All right, I was afraid of saying it here, but I was preferring the "recasting BP" scenario from the start, too.
In other news, photo evidence heavily implies that the Hawkeye series is set somewhere in the holiday season of 2024 or the new year of 2025, meaning it's taking place after Spider-Man: Far From Home.
Also, fun fact about Echo: she started off as a ward to one WILSON FISK. Could we see nods to the Man Without Fear soon eno-(*dopes slaps himself*) Never mind, might be too early...

I too have always though it made more sense to recast BP, but at this point I don't care much for recasting for having deplorable views.
So many actors and these days have been revealed to believe negative things these days, that the need to course correct and hatchet up series to keep only actors who won't humiliate themselves on social media attached is getting to be a real inconvenience to stories. As long as they're not actively harming anyone, I say just hold them accountable for their idiocy but don't let it affect the film itself.

She is actively spreading disinformation though.
That's how we know about this in the first place.
We shouldn't pretend that this isn't something dangerous even if it's not an outright hate crime.
And considering she also apparently posted some transphobic and Qanon related bullshit, the "not an outright hate crime" part is debatable.

Disgusted, but not surprisedIt's always a gradual advance towards a gray area. At some point, sooner or later, you get to an area where blacklisting someone is either retaliation over different sociopolitical views or a justified reaction according to perspective. It's always been that way no matter what the dominant cultural standard at the time is.

Couple of non-Letitia notes:
It was really wonderful to see the Hawkeye set photos. And cool that they cast Swordsman. And I agree, Vera Familigia (spelling?) really looks like Madame Masque. And although it is just from photos, I can oddly buy Renner as Classic!Hawkeye now instead of Ultimate!Hawkeye.
Also, since I like to make fun of Hawkeye's arc in Endgame, my prediction/hope is that the change will be explained as his personal life falling apart due to his time as Ronin, with the result that Clint reinvents himself as a seemingly bumbling sad sack who never kills.
And on a random note, I am really hoping that Moon Knight will be Jewish on the show and I intermittently get preemptively mildly angry that he probably won't be.
Edited by Hodor2 on Dec 4th 2020 at 7:24:44 AM
I honestly have never read a Moon Knight comic, but I'm aware that his father is a Rabbi, so probably.
And Spector is a commonish Ashkenazi Jewish name (while also being a clever Meaningful Name).
But since the show's director is Egyptian and I believe one of the announced cast members is also, I kind of suspect he'll be a Muslim or Christian Arab in the show.

I can't remember: with all the organized crime groups that showed up in the Netflix series, were any of them ever referred to as the Maggia?
