Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

x2 I hear ya. Even in the short 12 years since Iron Man Marvel has changed substantially. I think the Guardians in specific were actually taking cues from the then-recent Annihilation event, so these were also new-ish spins on old characters (I believe Groot himself is a 60s co-creator of Stan Lee).
While we're on the subject of EMH, I remember that in Kang's episodes he wanted to "restore the timeline" by taking Cap out. As I understand that's a very different motivation than in the 616 comics and also wasn't answered in the series itself. Sis the creators say what was up with that or no?

Yes
Kinda
Kang’s future timeline is destroyed SOMEHOW by Captain America being unfrozen. For whatever reason, this creates a timeline where the Kree invasion of Earth happens and the Kree rip the Sun in half
Kang’s solution was to kill Cap and take over Earth and beef up its technology to kick Kree ass
But the Avengers are able to avert Bad Future just by knowing about it and leaving Black Panther to die. Which is fine because he saves himself easily.

I actually do have trades of the Dn A Guardians run so yeah I can confirm the EMH version is based directly off the post-Annihilation team.
The costumes are pretty much identical to what they were in the comic.
About the only difference is Adam having a badass longcoat and Gamora & Drax aren't on the team.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."
x2 I understand that the ruined future was related to the Kree-Skrull war but that doesn't answer how Cap is an error in time unless he was somehow supposed to still be frozen, which I don't think was ever explained.
To tie the discussion into the MCU proper, I got the impression the time travel suits from Endgame were partially inspired by the space suits the Avengers wore in the big Kang arc of season 1.
EDIT: Also, I think the implicit explanation about how the future got ruined was that Skrull!Cap convinced Earth to surrender to the Skrulls, which put them in the Kree's crosshairs. By defeating the Secret Invasion they prevented the bad future, but it's been a while since I watched the show.

I know some comics that try to smooth the characterization gap have Quill's goofus behavior an intentional choice, either to get people to underestimate him or because of the emotional toll that Annihilation, the Phalanx Conquest, the War of Kings, Cancerverse invasion, happenings on the Guardians, and having to leave Dick Rider to his death all occurring within such a short period of time inflicted on him

Forever liveblogging the AvengersHe has been through a lot. Hell he's outright depressive in the 2019 run, just basically giving up to the point Groot had to forcibly take command.
There's a point where death is a mercy because Quill's life is straight up exhaustive.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."The cartoons usually try to sync with the movies for synergy. Except for Spider-Man,for some reason.
Like, the Avengers cartoon switched names every season to reflect whatever was going on in the MCU.
I remember when that resulted in Avengers Assemble basically doing the Civil War story-arc two seasons in a row.
And both story-arcs ended with the Avengers teaming up to stop Ultron.

I actually kind of liked Assemble. Granted I only watched the first two seasons. So take my opinion with a grain of salt. Is it as good as Mightiest Heroes? No. But on it's own it was a fun little show.

Fan-Preferred Couple cleanup threadOoooh Assemble also introduced Ant-Man early on & he was like a composite of Scott Lang with traits from Hank.
But Ant-Man is then reintroduced with Wasp to resemble the movie version entirely to the point Wasp makes mention of her tense relationship with her father & their personal video short is a straight up rip-off of the backyard training scene from the movie.
And then there's jamming in Vision with no introduction as to who he is or where he came from after Age of Ultron.
Man we are in a dark age for Marvel animation.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."
I'd have thanked the One Above All, but okay.
I don't want to say I hated Avengers Assemble, but it got too stale too fast for my liking. All the character models looked like they needed more shading or they sounded too sterile.
There was a fresh sense of both fun and stakes with Earth's Mightiest Heroes. I wanted to see where EMH was going and AA only made me tenuously care about the stakes.
I didn't know what was going on in Jeph Loeb's mind that made him think AA was "EMH done right" and since Nobu's actor called him a racist a while back, I REALLY don't know what was going on in his mind...

Like these Guardians are just so different compared to what came later. Star-Lord is a grizzled veteran soldier & not a puckish rogue, Rocket has a Cockney accent and appears to actually respect Quill, Groot is wearing clothes, the Guardians are an actual peacekeeping force with uniforms, & there are non-movie members here.
EDIT: Pagetopper. Reacted to the Guardians in Earth's Mightiest Heroes
