Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

He also plagued Sunspot's New Avengers team and then later on The 616 Ultimates which actually ended up with him resurrecting the original Ultimate Cap, Iron Man, Thor, Wasp, & Ant-Man.

Though he did kill Cap quickly after.

The Maker wants to be a general Marvel villain, not an FF villain.

Cataclysm seemed like it was trying to start Maker Reed on an redemption arc since he saw 616 Reed's life and seemed to regret everything he had lost ie a life with Sue.

But next time Reed showed up (with the lead-up to Secret Wars, I think?) he was back to being a total asshole.

The tragic problem with trying to redeem a villain in comics, especially when you're not completely doing but just kind setting the seeds for it later, is making it stick: the next guy to touch the character might not be you nor want the villain to change.

I'm still mad DC screwed up Detective Riddler...

@slimcoder That was less humor befitting a 13 year old and more just pure Values Dissonance. In the early 2000s nothing got you mocked harder than being gay. Not to defend it, but you gotta understand that context.

I'm looking at you, Harley Quinn.

It's hard enough to get good female rogues as it is. And no one wants to use them as villains?

Wake me up at your own risk.

I gotta admit, I could never really buy Harley Quinn or Poison Ivy as heroes or even antiheroes.

They've both done way too much bad shit to sweep it all under the rug even with the various cosmic retcons DC goes through.

I mean at least Killer Croc was treated like an animal all his life due to his horrible mutations.

While Harley & Ivy get their mutations late into adulthood so they live relatively privileged lives for the most part.

Plus even when infected they remain incredibly attractive people while Croc devolves into a monster.

Just being modern Joker's assistant for any amount of time would have made it hard to think of her as anything but another rogue.

The tragic problem with trying to redeem a villain in comics, especially when you're not completely doing but just kind setting the seeds for it later, is making it stick: the next guy to touch the character might not be you nor want the villain to change.

Another issue is if the villain has crossed too many moral event horizons making their redemptions very difficult or impossible to believe.

Unless you have breasts and you aren't the Blob, in that case the change has a much better chance to stick.

Jason Todd and Plastic Man's face turns have also stuck.

TBF, Jason started as a Face, and Eel O'Brien's time as a criminal was incredibly brief, and he was only ever a petty crook. He's far more well known as a hero.

It is rather annoying how much people expect Punchline to be redeemed despite nothing about the character showcasing she regrets her actions plus being redeemed would not only go against the point of the character but leave you with essentially nothing if she does go straight.

Its not bad writing if she stays evil folks.

How many people expect her to be redeemed? From what I've seen, most people are expecting her to die or be written out so Harley can come back to being Joker's moll.

To be fair, it is the dry season. All we really have to talk about are casting rumors for movies that may not be real.

So I’m guessing they’re holding off on Wanda Vision till the holiday season, presumably so everyone asks for a Disney + subscription as a stocking stuffer.

Have we heard otherwise? As it stands that’s the closest new entry, followed by whenever Black Widow finally hits theaters.

Which really isn't far away at all.

Makes sense. They're going to let Mandalorian get late into its season before hitting the audience with its next big project. That way, people keep their subscriptions going.

So I've been thinking of what other projects Marvel could do starring there more obscure characters for the public and came up with a few.

A Tigra series in which she works as a supernatural detective.

A series starring American Eagle and Puma in which they act as a Heroes for Hire style team (since we never got that from the Marvel Netflix shows). Eagle and Puma are even kind of like Luke Danny in some ways. Eagle has super strength and very strong skin. Puma is a martial artist with mystical powers.

These would probably have to be animation instead of live action.

[up][up][up]Jay Edidin of Jay & Miles X-Plain The X-Men recently cited X-Factor as the type of property that'd be perfect for a comedic Disney+ series. I think that'd be a cool idea.

Doctor Strange 2 Crew Arrives in London for Filming

Principal photography on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will soon begin as the film's crew has started to arrive in London ahead of filming. In a post to her Instagram Stories on Sunday, stunt performer CC Ice shared an image revealing she's now "in a bubble," the term for extended COVID-related measures prohibiting people from physically interacting with the outside world in hopes of stopping the spread of the coronavirus.

Ice has been a long-time collaborator with Marvel Studios and has served as Elizabeth Olsen's stunt double over the past few years. Working general stunts in Captain America: Civil War and Thor: Ragnarok, Ice then became Olsen's stunt double for Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, and reprises the role for Wanda Vision.
