Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

I'd be very amused if he made a Freedom Fries reference. It'd be the kind of semi-modern behavior (I guess it's like an almost twenty year old reference at this point) that would be an update to the whole "commie smashing" idea, anti-"terrorist" fervor, hostility toward conscientious objection and all.
Does Marvel have an awful lot of French characters for whom lines like that would be perfect for? There's Batroc, of course.
Pretty much.
Ya'll can call Batroc a lot of things, but if you call him a coward, then I hope you enjoy the new footprint based face tattoo he'll give you.
One Strip! One Strip! It was only a little while ago that I learned the "A doesn't stand for France" line was supposed to be a dig about France not supporting the Iraq War. I thought it was just generic Cheese-Eating Surrender Monkeys joke, and specifically a jab about their surrender to Nazi Germany in WWII.
That extra level of subtext just makes the line even dumber to me.
<looks up French characters on the Marvel wiki/database>
<unsurprisingly, the vast majority are X-Men characters>
"Hmm... glad Marvel Studios could finally use them if they wanted to, but unlikely to show up in anything non-X-Men related."
<the illegitimate kids of Norman Osborn and Gwen Stacy>
"Yeesh, no."
Not even specifically for Falcon and Winter Soldier. She's probably best for something else, I just like the concept. I'm a sucker for characters who mix medieval designs with superhero designs.

I kind of like the idea of Champions of Europe and/or other regional superteams (coughAlphaFlightcough) getting their own movies or tv shows or what have you in the future. Make the world of the MCU bigger. Especially ideas like HYDRA trying to branch out elsewhere in the world, and other teams rising to stop them.
Or, better yet, the Maggia. Count Nefaria is based in Italy, and I can't think of a single faithful adaptation of that group yet.

According to Millar, Ultimate Steve was supposed to be a deconstruction of this type of attitude.
YMMV on how well he handled it.

Yep, around 1:10
(also, warning about graphic violence, just in case).
Hey Mark where’s the deconstruction of the attitude?
You present Ultimate Cap as being pretty awesome and successful. What part was supposed to make people think “this is bad actually?”
Forever liveblogging the AvengersSure but by presenting it uncritically does not make it a deconstruction
It’s praised in the comic as incredibly funny by Nick Fury
There’s nothing in how it’s set up to make people take the opposite message that it wasn’t a cool funny thing for Cap to say
And yes, audience has a brain of its own. A lot of people didn’t like the moment or the portrayal of Cap but these people already didn’t like the portrayal.
It’s not changing minds of anyone who holds the attitude being supposedly deconstructed because it gives them exactly what they want
A cool superhero guy kicking ass and repeating the jingoist zeitgeist
Forever liveblogging the AvengersAt least started out like it. Many people actually become gradually better persons. The "Everybody is an asshole" meme is mostly from the very early days, most people don't even know Mark Millar only had a relatively short stint in the UU.

Grain of salt but allegedly there's a listing for a Wanda-Vision Funko Pop spoiling a character not yet confirmed
.
