Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I think they were mostly active during the end of the universes but it was just them failing and failing.

Plus Namor being the worst as always.

[up][up]Given that everything they did blew up in their faces, I'd say the discomfort was an Intended Audience Reaction.

Then again, I still think they were justified in shooting the Hulk into space.

Still, tricking him was a bit of a dick move. With how Bruce and the Hulk want to be left alone, you'd think just asking would have been enough instead of giving him someone to blame for acting like shady dickheads.

You'd think after all the bull, they'd just hand over Tony and Reed without further conflict.

The Hulk lost all sympathy when he went on a rampage in Vegas that killed about 20 people. That's what provoked this response in the first place.

Still a dumb move to not ask the guy who wanted to be left alone is if it was ok to put him in a place where he could be left alone.

Yeah that whole 'The Hulk is actually Super-Gandhi who calculates his damage and therefore never kills anybody.' was one of Pak's dumbest ideas. Thankfully it has been pretty much ignored by everybody else.

It was brought up by Ewing albeit when Hulk explicitly intentionally killed someone by eating them

They had to do something to keep the guy sympathetic in spite of being the patron saint of destructive meltdowns. But that one felt really dumb.

[up][up] Didn't Ewing later have a character point out that Hulk had indeed killed people before that moment?

Who would you guys like to see play the Fantastic Four? For me, I am hoping that they bring back Michael Chiklis to play the Thing. But I don't know who I would get to play the others.

I'd like Johnny's and Susan's actors to actually be related. As for Reed, honestly, he's bland enough in the looks department that any average white guy could get the part.

Michael Chiklis and Laurence Fisburne were indeed 2 very bright spots in these movies.

I don’t remember but wasn’t there a thing where Hulk tearing through Jackie Mc Gee’s neighborhood sent her dad into depression that he eventually died from? Because “just” property damage isn’t just property damage if it can’t be easily paid for?

Yeah, that's from Ewing's run. The Hulk would be treated like a monster and a villain under any other company.

This is marvel. We have a lot if dumb smart guys running around.

Cho caping for the Hulk makes him the dumbest.

Kind of a low bar to pass.

Hell, I'd say them retconning Ross into always being envious of the Hulk's power was them trying to cover up just how monstrous the Hulk could be if you put him under a microscope. It almost makes you think Mark Millar was onto something with his take on the Hulk.

Too late.

In this essay I will examine the line "Do you think this A on my forehead stands for France" and what it says about the society we live in and perhaps if it can be attributed to why are you pointing a gun at me all of a sudden?

In another series, a bunch of comparatively sympathetic soldiers would be focused on stopping the rampaging menace while Ross is likely the jackass boss that either caused the threat or makes things worse by smelling profit or power.
