Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Given how much they've been trying to bring in villains that haven't been adapted yet, and how Homecoming managed to fit in four comics villains at once (though two of them were two versions of the same supervillain) and set up a fifth, I wouldn't so quickly assume Electro is the sole threat or even the Big Bad.

At this point, all we know is he's in the movie.

Probably Harry Osborn as the Green goblin. And the third villain is the Rhino... oh, wait.

Technically him and Harry are in a Big Bad Duumvirate of sorts rather then a traditional Big Bad and The Dragon (second in command) type relationship in that film

Could they do kingpin so soon. I know it will be hard to match D'Oferino's awesome performance.

Harry had his chance twice and blew it twice. Give him a break for a while.

Now Kingpin in a live action movie would be a nice thing, especially if this is the Kingpin from the Netflix shows.

The legend has returned.

I'm wondering if they'll go with classic (dude in some kinda weird suit) Rhino, some version of Ultimate Rhino (dude in a mech suit, which is what ASM2 used....to shitty effect) or the tendency for animated adaptations to go with a genetically altered Rhino (like what Ultimate Spider-Man and Marvel's Spider-Man both used) for Rhino.

What is it with Spider-Man movies and putting a ton of villains in one movie? Hopefully this time it actually works out...

The Winter Soldier is one of the MCU's gold standards as for how to cram a bunch of villainsnote  into the same film while giving everyone their dues.

Into the Spider-Verse, albeit not an MCU film, also handled its three main baddiesnote  in a way the likes Spider-Man 3 or The Amazing Spider-Man 2 wish they could.

Actually, most Spider-Man live action movies, for all intents and purposes, have only one meaningful villain. Only Spider-Man 3 and Amazing Spider-Man 2 truly bucked the trend.

Spider-Man only had Norman. Spider-Man 2 only had Doctor Octopus. Amazing Spider-Man only had the Lizard. Homecoming only really had the Vulture; for all practical purposes both Shockers and Tinkerer were just mooks with fancy weapons. In Far from Home, 'Chameleon' literally only has the comic character's true name and nothing else. Really, seen that way, the single villain narratives have the multiple villain fests beaten 5 to 2.

The Batman franchise is a worse 'offender' in that regard.

So since Foxxx is back as Electro that rather heightens the possibility of the Netflix actors returning to reprise their roles aa well.

The ones that handle multiple villains well have them on the same team or something

All of the villains in Winter Soldier are Hydra, except Batroc

The villains in Spider Man 3 or Amazing 2 have their own separate plots until they’re jammed together for the ending

Giving them separate tiering instead of treating them all as equals helps.

All five of Winter Soldier's villains play totally different roles based on their hierarchy in the plot. Pierce is the Non-Action Big Bad, the titular character is The Heavy, Brock Rumlow is the tougher-than-average henchman to give the secondary protagonist (Falcon) a final opponent, Zola is a non-action One-Scene Wonder tying the film to the first one, and Batroc is just an action setpiece in the cold open.

X-Men movies, for instance, are pretty much obligated to have several villains at once, since a large enough team usually can't be fighting a single person for the duration of a whole film.

In a similar vein, Spider-Verse used the multiple villains to give all the many heroes each somebody to fight.

Shit I feel like playing Spider-Man again.

Huh come to think of it, I never did play the DLC. Finished the main game before it came out & never got back into it afterwards.

Was the DLC free?

Huh weird, I remember it being free if you pre-ordered it or something.

Eh I'll get to it when I get to it. Hmmmmh not sure if I should replay that or Batman: Arkham Knight first.

Huh weird, I remember it being free if you pre-ordered it or something.

I think there was a special Black Cat mission chain if you preordered or something, but it was pretty much completely distinct from the actual Black Cat story DLC (which was an additional charge) that came out later.

Responding to a post earlier on this page, we of course did have a live action film Kingpin, played very well by the late Michael Clarke Duncan. While the movie itself wasn't great, the character was well done.
