Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

I did always find it funny in Spider-Man 3 how Harry Osborne deciding to enact his revenge scheme, a criminal from Spider-Man's past unexpectedly getting superpowers, and a meteor carrying an alien lifeform striking down in Central Park all happened at the same time.
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!![]()
I'm reminded how in The Dark Knight the Joker had the really cool line "This city is in need of a better class of criminals" indicating that Joker represents the full arrival of masked supervillains but the effect of the speech is diluted since Bat goes straight into retirement after Knight ends.
Meaning he never fought anyone in the time between Joker/Two-Face & Bane.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."@Known Unknown. Same, I do like super hero stories that have the world reacting to super heroes.
Like Ultimate Spider Man the OG one had like a film studio trying to capitalize on the rise of superheroes and made a movie of Spider Man, complete with filming his fight with Doc Ock, or when Kingpin trolls Spidey by taking advantage of his popularity and merchandising him with the web head being unable to stop it.
Or that story arc in Batman with the colony trying to mimic the success of Batman for use in military applications.
Is there like a trope that is what we are describing.

"The Black Rage makes us strong, because we must resist its temptations every day of our lives or be forever damned!"So.... this happened. Guess the MCU Spider-Man side is the nexus of all realities.

Hmm, while Jamie Foxx is back as Electro, do you guys think his backstory will change in this version?
He/His/Him. No matter who you are, always Be Yourself. It's kind of funny how he just brought up that MCU Spidey was generally doing fine with adapting villains without a previous live-action appearance.
Still, if Foxx has a stronger script this time, he might as well have a similar turn around like Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool.

Well, aside from that montage
of Peter balancing normal and Spidey life, yeah, it was pretty much reviled.
I mean, J.K. Simmons as JJJ? Fine, but Jamie Foxx coming back as Electro?! Between Morbius and the MCU's Spider-Man 3, are they really going to bring in the Sinister Six?!
Edited by TargetmasterJoe on Oct 1st 2020 at 3:24:13 PM
I'm actually rather serious about the Sinister Six thing. Look:
- Vulture and Shocker (Homecoming)
- Mysterio (Far From Home)
- Electro (SM3)
If Morbius and Venom: Let There Be Carnage end up teasing Morbius and Venom as members, then bam! We have a viable roster for the Sinister Six! (Or if Morbius doesn't do the tease, then switch him with Scorpion, who appeared in Homecoming.)
Disney and Sony must've come up with one hell of a deal...
Well, Marvel Studios are the ones actually making the Spidey movies, so you might be more right than you think.

My problems with Electro were all because of the writing, rather than the acting, so this is fine by me.
I still maintain that the first third or so (and only the first third or so) of ASM 1 is fantastic, and pretty much everything about Electro leading up to his fight with Spider-Man at Times Square was great.
... and then it started to go very downhill, but that wasn't Jamie Foxx' fault. He played a fine Max Dillon when he was given good material.
Don't forget they set up Scorpion. And, since I know someone else is going to bring it up, there's a minor character named after Scorpion in Far From Home, though he's a good guy.

I remember not really being a fan of Foxx as Electro, or more specifically his performance as Max Dillon. As Electro, he was fine. As Max, I found his portrayal way too cartoonish and OTT to take him seriously. He seemed to invoke Jim Carrey as Edward Nygma in his performance, and I couldn't really sympathize with him as a Tragic Villain. His performance actually becomes a lot subtler once he becomes a glowing supervillain with lightning powers.
But it has been a while since I last saw The Amazing Spider-Man 2. I may have to rewatch it again to reevaluate my opinions on his performance. I think separated from TASM2, I think he can turn in a good performance.
So yeah, I have no idea what to make of this news. I think this is just going to be Foxx playing a different incarnation, unless Sony's really going to lean into Spider-Verse shenanigans. Maybe this is just an attempt to fill out contractual obligations that were made before the Amazing Spider-Man series was cancelled?

Yeah, I don't think this is going to be Spider-Verse either. The set up isn't right for it, the time isn't right for it, and there's already a current series of a Spider-Verse movies so there wouldn't be a point.
Most likely he's just playing a different version of the same character. I'm not even sure we should assume Electro will be the main villain at this point.
As I recall, there was an arc in that Web-Warriors series (Spider-Gwen, Spider-Ham, Spider-Girl, and a few others) where a version of Electro learned to travel to alternate dimensions and teamed up with a version of himself who was super successful (and smart) but didn't have his powers in order....I think take over the multiverse or something. I can't quite recall.
Not sure how he did it, but it's been stated that Max is stupid powerful, and just doesn't know how to use that power to its full potential. He's apparently on par with Magneto.
One Strip! One Strip! How was it a gender flip of Superman?
I think this is due to the Raimi movies being self-contained and not really being much of a superhero universe aside from Spider-Man and a few villains being in it.
I think that speech was more about the Joker than any other villains coming to Gotham.
You don't remember the alleyway scene where Diana saves Steve by deflecting a mugger's bullet with her wristband? Diana has the alien part down, the "effectively godlike" part down, and quite a few other elements.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"The 'timing' of a live-action Spider-Verse movie would be right enough, Wandavision will bleed into Doctor Strange II, and that will probably bleed into this if possible. Sony going cray-cray on the multiverse concept makes sense, as the animated one got them an oscar. The comic books have even made Spider-Man the champion of their multiverse.

I love superhero movies that imply that the world is reacting to what the heroes are doing, even if they don't necessarily affect the plot the hero is going through. Stuff like the bit about other countries trying to replicate Iron Man tech, or Cross making deals with HYDRA (I really wish Ant-Man had kept that Zola cameo), etc and so on.
