Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Well the MCU throughout most of Phase I was using lesser known leads and veteran support staff. Best of luck to her, because she is not going to have an easy time of it.

She looks perfect.

Imo, Kamala is exactly the kind of character who should be played by a newcomer.

[up][up] I was thinking the same. A bit of Enforced Method Acting by way of Actor-Shared Background or something, maybe.

I find it kinda amusing that Tony didn't actually kill any of his films'/Avengers's big bads until snapping Thanos away. Plenty of henchmen, but none of the main baddies.

Pepper killed Stane and Killian, Vanko killed Vanko, and Vision killed Ultron.

Not really accurate. Pepper killed Stane under Tony's instructions and the blast that he and Rhodes generated is what actually kills Vanko. He just triggered the self-destruct before he died. And since Tony did create Vision, he does have a hand in Ultron's death.

Spiderman activating his Instant Kill mode in Endgame felt to me like a combination of Godzilla Threshold with Chekovs Gun. That mode was a running joke in Homecoming, but it was the only equipment of the suit we never got to see working, and if there was one occasion that warranted it it was this battle.

Then again, they were fighting aliens. What Measure Is a Non-Human? has been a trope for some time in the comics too.

Not just aliens, but the Outriders, which seem to be more like alien attack hounds than intelligent life. For however much that is worth on the What Measure Is a Non-Human? scale.

I'm curious about Ms. Marvel's adoration of Carol. Does the public know about Captain Marvel, and if so how much?

I assume they're going to establish that during the five years between IW and Endgame, Carol was off and on Earth and had adventures that caused Kamala to become a fan of hers.

She probably got some major publicity from the climactic battle on Earth vs Thanos, but my assumption was that Captain Marvel 2 would have a modern day adventure and we see Kamala cameo there as a fan of hers.

Curious how they're going to establish the "Ms. Marvel" codename, as it's a moniker Carol's never used in the MCU.

Heh. While I enjoyed Captain Marvel it did suffer from a lot of Franchise Original Sin-related blandness so I find that rating pretty agreeable.

It's a solid 7/10. I actually think it's just about the best solo origin movie we've gotten since Iron Man 1 (not counting Got G or Black Panther) by far.

[up][up][up] & [up][up]: Likewise. I think being largely self contained and being very clear about the kind of movie it's attempting to homage also helps it as an origin film as well.

I didn't have any specific gripes with it but I found the overall product somewhat insipid. It feels like a Phase 1 origin movie that time-travelled to Phase 3. Still good but not really groundbreaking.

Didn't love it, didn't hate it. Just kind of average for an MCU movie to me. Had some pretty funny moments though. If they do a good job moving forward with the character, I can see me growing to love it. After all, Thor was kind of bland too in his first movie, and he's a fan favorite now.

Its a perfectly well-made movie, its just middling as a result which is expected since we get so many films. Not all of them can be hits.
