Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

How many films are going to be in 2021. Can one year carry this many big blockbusters.

[up][up][up][up] And yet, Ross has a track record of escalating Hulk incidents.

[up]Sooner or later, they are going to suffer.

He also has a record of teaming up with Hulk against bigger threats, like the aforementioned General Ryker or the other more malevolent Gamma Mutates.

Ross is like Jameson in a lot of ways, up to including meta wise. How much of a jerk varies from writer to writer.

How many films are going to be in 2021.

Hell, we're not even sure if theaters will be open by then.

[up][up]Like The audience is only so many and the pandemic is unlikely to go away totally next year. If they keep stacking films like this were going to see the market collapse.

They’re going to need to space things out a lot even in the most optimistic estimates. Granted, once the disease is dealt with and we can all go out again theaters will be packed, but even that initial euphoria will wear off.

The thing is we don't really know when things will go back to normal. Even when the vaccine comes people will cautiously wait a bit first before they rush back.

I think they need to just give in and release them all on VOD. This pandemic has pretty much killed the theatrical model

I don't see the slate becoming too packed. While a lot of films have been delayed, there also haven't been any new films going into production, so the backlog of finished-but-not-released-yet films should be about the same as ever.

That's going to be our like only mcu stuff for the later half of the year (hell the Dubious Canon of agents of shield means it might be the only Canon mcu stuff we see this year).

RE: all MCU movies moving to even further next year:

Damn you, COVID-19... sad

Let's hope WandaVision is standalone enough to not spoil BW and TFATWS.

As a side effect, it means that while Spider-Man: (insert phrase with the word "Home" in it here) is staying put for December 2021, Love and Thunder and Multiverse of Madness won't be around until 2022.

Speaking of Multiverse of Madness, someone came up with this fan poster and now I want to see Bruce Campell as an alternate universe Nick Fury...

Disney has recently revealed a mural by online artist Nikkolas dedicated to Chadwick Boseman.

You can find it at the Downtown Disney shopping and dining district at Disneyland.

"Also Tom Cruise would probably insist on being put in an armored suit with working jet boosters."

I'd rather think he would want a sidekick or doll or whatever called "Bob", a female love interest whose actress would be at least 25 years younger than him, a scene where he runs, a scene where he drives a bike, a ballcap (borrow Feige's own?) and a crazy stunt no one has ever done before (not excluding the jet boosters, though that's been done before already).

I feel like there's a small chance Tom Cruise will do something like his role from Tropic Thunder.

That's neat, I guess. Not sure if/how this will tie into a BP sequel or anything like that, but the worldbuilding is nice.

Finally finished Iron Fist's first season. I mean it helps that I'm over three years removed from its release but I didn't think it was terrible, necessarily. It's got some good aspects and the Meachums basically stole the show; I really liked them. But yes it's possibly the worst of the Netflix side and certainly a result of dodgy production and an inept showrunner. Which evidently extends to the direction since the performances for Danny and Bakuto at least just kind of stink. Can't wait to start season 2...just gotta get through Defenders first because my completionist ass says so. What joy.

That puts me in a conundrum.

Its like I wanna complete Daredevil first. Like I'm not saying I won't eventually watch Jess & Luke, but its just ya know I'm into DD the most so I wanna complete his show first.

But due to the shows interconnectedness watching season 3 might be a bit tricky without watching Defenders.

Iron Fist Season 1 seemed a lot better after Inhumans Season 1 back then.

Iron Fist Season 1 seemed like a blip on the overall MCU record, the "Okay they ALL can't be awesome its not bad could be better but still watchable" then came Inhumans...which has the honor of being the first MCU Bomb
