Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

For any naysayers in the audience, Variety's got you covered.
And indeed, Tatiana Maslany was the main lead for Orphan Black.

That's a good point.
Are we talking about green body paint or motion capture.
Moreover, should we expect the leotard or a bodysuit?
(I kid. Leotards would probably be way too wedgie-prone, right?)
I remember having doubts about Kamala when she was first announced as "First Muslim Superhero!!!! Look how Marvel is progressive!!!". I came to love her approximately 15 pages into her first story, but when all you know about her is the hype I can understand that some people would experience some Hype Aversion.
Now there are also some people who will harp about any character from a minority on the account that "it's PC showed down our throats", and it is not limited to Marvel (boy did it become ugly in Doctor Who).
Whatever your favourite work is, there is a Vocal Minority that considers it the Worst. Whatever. Ever!.I have no beef with Kamala Khan as a character because I have no familiarity with her. I don't read the comics. If she's introduced into the MCU, I'll do my best to enjoy her.
The specific beef here is with the Marvel's Avengers video game, which uses Kamala as an audience surrogate (itself not a problem) in an utterly generic, serial numbers filed off game that exists mainly to merchandise itself and its sponsors. She's headlining a crass, cynical exercise in corporate marketing and greed. It's not a good look no matter how positively she's portrayed.
Edit: As I said in the ZP thread, I suppose any representation is better than no representation, but "joining the consumerist sheep" doesn't really feel like something a minority should aspire to.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I don't believe in those miracles.
Even Holland (The Younger Spider-Man) is older than his character.
*3. It must be difficult to interpret a lot of clones and give each one a distinctive personality.
It can be argued that there are many actors who have played clones, but in most cases the clones have the same personality, while in Orphan Black it has more merit because the clones have different personalities.

Hiring an actual teenager comes with a host of issues involving things like labor laws and the ethics of juggling celebrity life with education. A Younger Than They Look actor like Tom Holland is probably the most effective route for someone like Kamala.
Snap aside, the MCU seemed to have been roughly following the way passes in the real world, apart from the occasional Continuity Snarl. So I guess that a Spider-Man movie set 2 or 3 years from now could also feature a more aged Peter in college or something.
Kamala could be played convincingly by a 18-20 years old who looks a bit younger than she is.

"Really the annoying thing is that they aren't going that far in diversity because the Avengers game still engages in Token Minority."
Token Minority or not, Kamala is the protagonist of the game whose development goes far beyond her ethnicity.
