Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

It’s time to bring about people who have mother issues, the Maternals.

Bring in Blade, Werewolf by Night, and maybe a few others. They can be the Nocturnals.

...Jokes aside, it is interesting that Eternals is being written by two rather inexperienced screenwriters. Especially when their only other produced project is a short form documentary.

[up]X4 What? No it was....

Wake me (at night) when we get the Nocturnals.

-_-

Fine. Then instead, have them fight during the day as the Diurnals.

Lets see someone take that one.

Well, Marvel won't be able to release the film this year. To make due, they'll have to film something with all the unsold popcorn laying around the movie theatres.

It's called The Kernels.

[up]x3- That gives me pause, especially when the Eternals are even more Jack Kirby than the Fourth World. Getting that kind of insanity across is going to be tough.

Well, Zhao's two previous films that I've seen are quite good, so that's a positive sign.

And honestly, the fact that the Firbo's are so unknown, yet Marvel is trusting them with a movie like this, is a pretty good indicator, all things considered.

The main writer for Black Panthers was relatively low-profile although he did some solid work on some TV shows before, and IIRC Ryan Coogler helped write some of the script himself.

Coogler is also in that sweet spot of making films that are both commercially and critically successful.

Eternal's directing/writing crew is a little bit more to the arthouse side of things.

However the Firpos have sold other scripts, its just those movies haven't finished production yet.

Here's a question I never thought to ask - why is Steve worthy in Endgame but not in Age of Ultron?

Sounds legit. I guess Thor's not the only member of the team who speaks the language of hammer.

We think he was always worthy and was being polite in Age of Ultron.

I think the Word of God of the Endgame writers is that Steve always could move it but didn't in that moment, since he didn't want to hurt Thor's feelings. Or something like that. [nja]

However, in AOU itself, it seemed reasonably clear that Whedon didn't see Steve as worthy (he never really came across as being the biggest fan of the character) and also wanted to set up Vision being shown as trustworthy since he could lift the hammer easily.

Edit - Like IMO, in AOU, the point seems to be that neither Tony or Steve are worthy (although maybe Steve is slightly less unworthy), and so Steve is being santimonious/doesn't have the moral high ground.

I personally kind of like the theory that basically no one was worthy at that moment, since they were trying to lift it as a parlor trick.

Also, I don't know how much this played a part in Whedon's writing, but it doesn't necessarily make for a good dramatic moment if the party is when Cap or someone else is able to lift the hammer. It makes more sense to save that for a dramatic moment.
