Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

[up]Considering that Strange is going to bring the multiverse concept, I think it's likely.

I just hope that if that group shows up, they will be morally ambiguous at worst.

I don't want Hyperion in this universe to be just another "evil Superman".

I don't know if Dr. Strange is going to explore the literal multiverse, or if they're just renaming the dimensions concept that's more akin to what Dr. Strange usually encounters. Like the Dark Dimensions, Dream Dimension, Chaos Dimension, etc. Much of the information we're getting for it implies so.

And it wouldn't be the first time the MCU renamed X thing to Y thing, despite Y name having connotations that aren't what X actually explores.

They're also making a What If? movie, so I'm guessing Strange will indeed be going to alternate universes.

Imagine if they managed to get Henry Cavill to play Hyperion. (Gal Gadot playing Power Princess is probably too much to hope for).

When was this announced? Last I checked they were just making a What If? animated series.

I forget if I already shared a link, but I watched a compilation of Wong's scenes in the MCU, and he mentioned the existence of the multiverse as far back as his first film appearance.

The concept of a multiverse pops up a lot in Dr. Strange, but it is presented less as an "alternate earths" kind of way and more as "distinct dimensions", such as the Mirror and Dark Dimensions also featured in that film.

But alternate timelines/realities are also canon to the MCU given Strange searched them to find the future in which Thanos lost.

He searched through possible futures using the Time Stone, but there's a difference being able to see hypothetical futures and said hypothetical futures being physical realities that you can travel to.

Yeah. It seems that he can only bring those realities about if he does things exactly as he saw.

Which means there might be universes where Quill not flipping out (or being stopped before he could) lead to them losing.

Right, this.

When alternate universes show up in Dr. Strange, it's not "another world where everyone's in 1602 / Justice League expies exist / Civil War ended with Stark and Rogers getting married / etc" - that's the kind of thing reserved more for What If? and other similar titles.

Where Dr. Strange is concerned, alternate universes are "another realm of existence where physics are completely different / the personal domains of powerful beings / where everything is made of fingers / composed of pure chaos / etc." Magical realms and states of existence, not alternate versions of reality.

We've gotten word that the villain of this is Nightmare (or at least was intended to be at one point), which kind of reinforces this - most likely we're going to be delving into the Dream Dimension. And if they're delving into that in general, we're likely (or... well... hopefully) going to end up seeing the Chaos Dimension as well.

I'd be very surprised if they did that, but I could see it being done as a jokey post-credits gag.

Although honestly, if Marvel really wanted to throw people for a loop, they'd get Jeffrey Combs and have Dr. Strange cross paths with his Divorced Installment counterpart Doctor Mordrid.

I'd have to imagine some people in the MCU knew about this for a while.

Sadly, I don't think we'll be seeing Black Panther in Phase 4 anytime soon. There's no way Feige and Coogler can see anyone *but* Boseman as T'Challa.

And in all fairness, that's the right call. It's respect.
