Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Random thought: what if ABC aired the MCU stuff that's coming to Disney+ after a few months or so? It'd be a major plus (heh) for anyone who doesn't have a Disney+ account and it'd give them incentive to check out the service. It could also help ward off streaming pirates, I think.
Or is regular TV already well on its way to obsoletion to even consider the idea?

Zero chance. D+ is probably a higher priority now.
Olivia Wilde is directing a Marvel movie for Sony, rumored to be Spider-Woman
.
Yes. It's not for awhile though since it's the 5th Disney+ show on the schedule and the pandemic has made finishing filming any of them impossible.
Kamala Khan will also appear in the films after her show.
It's hard to say how they'll factor in her Inhuman origin since that's a fairly involved concept. However ultimately the precise origin of her powers isn't super important to the character the way it would be for, say, a member of the Royal Family.
They could do the whole Inhuman thing with her being exposed to terrigen mist in a small scale event and have some vehicle for explaining that she's a descendant of someone who was experimented on by the Kree.
Or they could go down a more ironic path and make her a mutant. Though that's dependent on the concept of mutants being introduced in the MCU prior to her series.

Drat. My family's too stingy for another streaming service...
Found out about it almost immediately. Nearly thought it was saying she was in the role of Spider-Woman, so that's my bad.
EDIT: Olivia Wilde teases the Internet by commenting on the Deadline article with a spider emoji.
Spider-Woman's happening.

Jessica Drew appearing was teased at the end of the cancelled Silver and Black script, so she's sure to be considered by Sony. And we also know she'd be appearing in Spider-Gwen's Spider-Verse spinoff.
I actually do think there's an honest chance they will make her a mutant instead. The precise origin of her powers isn't vital to the character, and there's just going to be more story potential with her being a mutant instead given the overall direction of the MCU.
In fact it's likely that the only reason she was an inhuman in the first place was because Marvel Comics were pushing Inhumans at the time of her creation. Now those same factors favor her being a mutant.
The only potential issue here is how Marvel intends to introduce mutants into the MCU. As a concept they work better as something that's been part of the setting from the beginning, but the MCU doesn't really have that luxury.
My personal guess is that it will ultimately revealed that mutants have always been around, but their numbers were so few historically no one was ever able to study them as a group. However some of the cosmic shenanigans that have occurred in the MCU have triggered an explosion in the mutant population. That nicely lets them explain why mutants haven't been a thing in the MCU previously, but there's a whole bunch now, while still allowing some wiggle room for specific mutants to predate current events when it's important to the character.
There really aren't many characters left with whom Coulson had a notable connection. Tony and Nat are dead, Steve's arc is over, Thor is off with the Guardians, and I don't remember Coulson having any interactions with Clint or Banner at all. The best time for a Coulson cameo probably would've been Tony's funeral.
Rewatching Guardians of the Galaxy and I'm reminded of why I liked it in the first place. The whole thing is one big fun action-packed joyride with surprisingly serious character moments to balance out perfectly. Plus, I like space as a setting because the big action scenes fit perfectly.
So, let's hang an anchor from the sun... also my TumblrWe're probably reaching straws here, but...
Josh Gad praises the recent news regarding Olivia Wilde...and she responded to it.
What's weird is that Josh tagged Marvel Studios and Olivia made no attempt to correct him.
Again, might be absolutely nothing, but let's keep a collective ear to the ground just in case...
I'm suddenly reminded of how the Coulson/Clint ship used to be absolutely omnipresent, somehow, despite being an enormous crackship, and how it went from nearly everyone shipping it to nobody caring in the span of a couple of years.
Agents of SHIELD now feels sadly like one of those Expanded Universe things that the main work takes care of never so much as acknowledging.
At least the Coulson fans have been able to get their fix in Captain Marvel, which by the way did not outright contradict AoS (and even hinted that Kree blood could be used to revive humans, which was a big plot point in the series), so who knows.
I feel kinda ashamed that the only role of Josh Gad I can think of right now is Olaf, which makes it kinda difficult for me to imagine him in an MCU role, apart maybe as HERBIE.

Whatever your favourite work is, there is a Vocal Minority that considers it the Worst. Whatever. Ever!.I think that Agents of Shield really only became non-canon as of Season 6 and 7.
As pointed out, nothing in Captain Marvel contradicts it (and it might even explain where they got that Kree body from), Season 1 directly leads into Winter Soldier, and a lot of the stuff happening in 2-4 at least references some other movies in some way.
Season 5 even directly points out that Thanos is on his way to Earth and hints that the events of Infinity War are taking place at the same time.
Then comes 6 and 7 where they just went off the rails.
Yeah, the connection is super loose, and not even there on the movies end, but it was there up until Endgame made it impossible.
One Strip! One Strip!

Feels like Endgame was one big rush to the big battle at the end
