Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

The Sally Floyd speech is hilarious because it uses Myspace as a giant cultural touchstone.

Imagine if that was written today. "Captain America, you are hopelessly out of touch with the modern man because you won't do the funny dance on the Chinese spyware app."

This place is careless.

Captain America on Tinder or Tik Tok would totally get the ladies all over him.

I hate Jameson too, so that is kinda barking at the wrong tree there.

But Jameson can at least be entertaining while being a dick. Sally doesn't even have that going for her.

[up] Jameson also has his moments of humanity.

Plus he's now Spidey's biggest supporter in the comics, i love it.

Jameson has both seniority and the fact that he’s usually a comic relief on his side. Sally may be morally right to call Cap on his bullshit, but she’s still an ass.

The whole war was stupid and the law went full fascist in minutes. Hell, the thing started because Maria Hill tried to arrest Cap for not being comfortable with the law before it even got going. And that was just the start of all the unethical stuff they did. If that's the law, telling the USA to shove it was the smarter move.

Marvel kind of forgot they conditioned their readers to jump and hiss at the idea of registration.

[up] The entire history of the X-men and that time Mr. Fantastic successfully argued against an earlier registration act?

What's that?

Like I said, the writers themselves admitted the pro-reg side had the better argument. The violation of civil liberties was done for drama because otherwise, it would be the anti-reg faction arguing for the right to take the law into their hands with no consequences.

I don’t think Millar understands comic fans

He certainly doesn’t respect them very much

Ironically, Millar said he didn't like Captain America: Civil War because it was too dark.

"Civil War had a good opening twenty mins, but then I honestly can't remember what the movie was about," wrote Millar. "It's interesting the Russos have a background in comedy because it's really missing in these otherwise well-made pictures and very, very missed. I really hope this bleakness doesn't extend into their two Avengers pictures because what made that first Avengers work was the light as well as shade and I'll be sad if that's all lost like it was in this picture."

In his defence, he wrote some great arcs for the Superman: The Animated Series comic book tie in.

He also did Superior, which I feel was him taking advantage of his own rep and then deliberately doing something more optimistic.

Taking the law into their own hands is the very definition of the superhero genre though.

Ironically, Millar said he didn't like Captain America: Civil War because it was too dark

The guy who wrote a story where the Hulk rapes and impregnates his cousin and who once proposed a twenty-two page story that was nothing but Wonder Woman being raped, thinks the movie based on the comic he wrote was too bleak?

I honestly don't know if he was sincere or just looking for attention as usual.

Taking the law into their own hands is the very definition of the superhero genre though.

True but that doesn't mean characters in-universe have to be okay with it when it leads to disaster.

"Taking the law into their own hands is the very definition of the superhero genre though."

Actually, this is not necessarily true. A stereotypical superhero does not actively punish criminals, they just hand them over to the justice system.

Still, there are laws in most jurisdictions about civilians acting as vigilantes. It is literally illegal to stalk the streets looking for criminals to arrest, or to interfere with the police doing their jobs. Spider-Man's thing in some versions is listening to a police scanner for crimes, then suiting up and foiling the villains, literally preempting the police.

By accident mind you, and the kid still does a lot of good, and even manages to get out of the deal. Plus there's apparently still a lot of idealism in the story.

Re: Mark Millar: His complaint about Captain America: Civil War wasn't that it got too dark, but that it got too grim and serious, losing the comedic, playful tone. While Millar's work features a lot of dark and messed up stuff, I get the impression he views most of that as Dark Comedy.

RE: Mark Millar's thoughts on Captain America: Civil War:

lol wut? He thought the movie that was loosely based on his story with too much going on, fascist Tony Stark, mindless Thor clones, and people being dumb in general was too bleak?

Was it because of the whole "Bucky killing the Starks" thing? Because if anything, it's almost too hopeful what with the ending teasing that Cap and Tony would make up eventually, only for it to not happen until Endgame.

(I still love how the movie made me care about Black Panther and seamlessly wove Spider-Man into the MCU.)

While the point is was wrote badly as it obvious

Yeah, it was the writer that decided that was a good argument. He didn't intend it be as ridiculous as it was.

I don't know about that. Jameson has a much more irrational and petty hatred of superheroes than Sally does and has done far more heinous things because of that hatred.

Sally doesn't hate powered individuals at all.

Sally at least isn't responsible for the creation of two super villains.

For that matter, Jameson once used a Spider-Slayer to try and kill Spidey himself.

J. Jonah Jameson is supposed to be both a buffoon and an antagonist, though, even if he's acquired a fair number of Pet the Dog moments over the years.
