Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Well i admit Reed probably can move past Civil war, but i recently did re-read the thing, and wow, he's even more unlikable than Tony and bordering on an alien who can't comprehend human beings.

Like the latter part is what people need to work with in regards to Reed's character.

He seems okay in the Dan Slott Fantastic Four, characterization wise.

There's some interesting takes elsewhere like him getting all up in Moon Girl's business because he cannot believe that this small genius does not like him and doesn't want his input

And him electrocuting Spider-Ham just because he knows it won't kill him. That sure was a take.

Another chosen Mandarin ring host was a Broadway director hired by Tony Stark to create a musical based on his life. For whatever reason, he thought it was a good idea to portray the guy who hired him to direct the musical as a sexual deviant. Tony wasn't amused and had him fired and replaced. The director nursed a murderous grudge and became a supervillain thanks to one of the Mandarin's rings. Though his career was short-lived since Malekith killed him and took the ring for himself.

It's not just MCU Tony who has a weird knack for getting people to hate and want to kill him.

[up] How legit is that?

Because i can buy it. XD

[up][up][up] You would be surprised. I mean Tony Stark was supposed to be seen as compassionate in Civil War comic version. And yeah.

As for Reed Richards...yeah, he can be an insufferable idgit at times. There was that one time he taunted Hank Pym by claiming he knew more about Pym Particles than Hank did.

Is it flat out a fact that Richards is more intelligent than Doom? Like, is there any wiggle room there at all?

Yes, Richards is smarter than Doom. They both know it. Part of the climax of Secret Wars 2015 was Doom finally admitting it.

Meanwhile Dr. Doom was a poor Romanian peasant kid who immigrated to the USA then eventually became a self-Made Man, compared to Reed living the good life and generally being a privileged American yeah, there's a reason why Doom has a bigger fanbase.

[up][up][up] Well Doom has more knowledge in magic than Reed. It's just Dr. Strange has him beat in that field.

[up][up]Reed's at least able to admit his limits in that field. He knows he's no good with magic and that no matter how much he tries to make sense of it, he'll never be good with magic.

Doom still has more accomplishments than Reed does, tell me when Reed turns a back water nation into a first world country that can rival the USA.

[up][up]What he did to Latveria isn't really an accomplishment. He took over a country and established a brutal dictatorship where all of the citizenry are too afraid to speak up. That Latveria was a shithole even before Doom took over doesn't change that.

All Doom really did was replace the Latverian monarchy's secret police with his own robot police.

Latveria's kind of had bad luck when it comes to leadership, is what I'm saying.

Reed probably could do something similar and "better" - he'd just have to throw out all of his scruples and respect for freedom. Seriously, you really think Reed couldn't take over a poor country and remake it into a technological superpower?

Shit, Ultimate Reed (ie the one who became a supervillain) kind of pulled that off. The Maker essentially shows just how bad Reed could get if he shared Doom's mindset. Turns out it's really really bad.

Doom is like Luthor.

For all his talk about how much he could make the world the better if his nemesis didn't exist, he ultimately is just a megalomaniac.

[up] Ultimate Reed pulled an evolution base where he evolved a bunch of people millions of years & shit. He did it bigger than Victor.

Man, that's gotta suck for Doom.

I admit, I always get an irrational bug up my butt when explicit lines are drawn like that. XD Like, part of me wonders what makes Doom so dangerous if he's objectively worse than the heroes are at all the things he's good at.

Dunno if they'd feel comfortable talking about some dictatorship as an accomplishment, honestly. We aren't exactly in the point where they can accidentally look like they endorse fascism or something.

[up][up]What makes Doom dangerous is that he's good at damn near everything. He may not be at the top of any field, but he's in the top ten or top five of all of them.

Marvel intelligence isn't like DBZ power levels basically.

Just because Reed is some arbitrary amount of smarter than Doom doesn't mean Doom can't come up with fiendish traps and him being second best at a lot of things makes him a lot more versatile than the heroes he fights.

Ehh so Doom turned it into a fascist nightmare where his subjects are fearful of him and Doombots are the secret police, the quality of living and freedom is unmatched.

I mean, clearly the terrified population is happy they live under a benevolent dictator like Doom. Just look at all the people trying to escape or trying to overthrow him.

[up] It's a real depending on the writer, but generally the people love Doom, while the higher ups conspire to overthrow him.

I'll once again point out there was an entire comic story arc revolving around this. Though I also pointed out that a lot of them had really stupid and petty motivations - certainly nothing remotely proportionate with becoming bonafide supervillains.

Besides that one guy who blamed Tony for failing to stop the guy's own drunken murderous rampage that killed his family, there was Pepper's fiance, who hated Tony because Pepper keeps being involved in Tony's drama and figured becoming part of a supervillain team out to kill Tony was a good idea.

Eh. Sounds logical to me. As for Reed, just avoid making him an ass. I mean, he can pull some dumb stunts due to how he gets caught up in sciencing, but he should always be someone Sue would legitimately love, and Ben would honestly be friends with. Just drop the other shit.

Make him...somewhat humble too. Yeah, he's smart, he knows he's smart, and maybe he can be Innocently Insensitive about it, but he never actively seeks to lord it over everyone, and doesn't think he's got anything to prove.
