Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Angering Osborn would be pretty easy. Stark Industries would just have to show up Oscorp at some point or another, although that'd give you the origin to half the corporate villains in Marvel.

The mini reactor Tony threw at the end of Iron Man 3 struck and killed a pet walrus belonging to a Mr. Hubert Carpenter.

That's actually the canon reason J. Jonah Jameson hated Spidey in the comics. Spidey's mere existence as a superhero made Jameson feel inadequate.

Feeling Oppressed by Their Existence is a surprisingly common motivation for supervillains. Lex Luthor for example wants to kill Superman just for showing up and being better than him.

The trigger that motivated Tony to take up Cap's proposal, invent time travel, meddle with time in such a way that allowed 2014 Thanos into 2023, and ultimately forced Tony to sacrifice himself was a photo of himself with Peter. So, technically, in a roundabout way, Peter did kill Tony.

Granted, they eventually changed that motivation as JJ became more sympathetic over the years.

Which supervillain has a wife?

So we can have a “Tony Stark slept with my wife.”

[up]All of Spidey's rogues are single. None of them are the type who can hold down a stable marriage.

[up]x2 Mr. Freeze. But seriously the only Marvel villian I can think of who is married is the Lizard. Maybe the Absorbing Man? Can't quite remember.

[up][up]I don't think Crusher Creel is a Spidey rogue though. Doesn't really work with the Running Gag of MCU Spidey's rogues all being motivated by something Tony did.

[up]x2 Oh I thought we were talking in general. My bad. Though the Lizard often does have a family, but I doubt Marvel wants to go back to that particular well.

[up] In the classic continuity she dies giving birth to Harry. Not to say that's it's an impossible change but it would potentially be a significantly different take on the Osborns if she was alive.

But in a very tense way.

[up][up]She didn't die giving birth to him. She faked her death making it look like it was due to being weakened from birth just to get away from Norman.

Also, Connor's family is back. They were resurrected via cloning and are now also reptile-human hybrids like Curt.

It's kind of the issue when you don't have a particularly interesting rogues gallery.

And Ultron as a general concept is closer to Stark's handbook than whatever Hank Pym is supposed to do.
