Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Vanko was right in more ways than one. As I sometimes like to observe the subtle reference (and probable coincidence) that Vanko states in Iron Man 2 "There will be blood on the water and the sharks will come.". Io and behold that Civil War, the movie in which Tony's choices reach a peak of things collapsing under their own weight, has a trailer song named "Sharks Don't Sleep".

Makes sense.

If there's one thing the MCU has taught, it's that being dead doesn't stop people from wanting to destroy Tony Stark.

I just hope they don't cross the line and go after Morgan. If they do, they deserve all the nukes to the face.

This is pretty much the perfect opportunity to introduce Riri.

Someone has to inherit the Stark Legacy after all.

I feel like she should have been set up while he was still alive if they wanted to do that... Right now Iron Man already has two proteges/successors in Peter and... That kid from Iron Man 3, I think it was.

Yeah, I guess having his daughter become a power armor using hero would work. She won't be old enough for a while yet though, unless they do another time skip.

His daughters not really a super-genius though. She’s appears to be just a regular kid.

Morgan’s claim to inheritance is solely by blood.

So, if it were me, I'd have an older Morgan administer scholarships and befriend Riri through that and be "the girl in the chair".

Also, I was just looking up Riri on a Marvel Wiki and I had no idea that the character is supposed to be from Chicago. That's cool. On the less cool side (but not a bad Ripped from the Headlines choice), the detail about her being caught in a shooting in a park reminds me of Hadiya Pendleton.

Plot twist: Older Morgan becomes Riri's archenemy.

@Peter: I really want them to stop writing Peter as a sidekick who needs someone to follow after and tell him what to do, and I think Far From Home was specificially written to deconstruct and have him move past that behavior.

That said, I do really want a Spidey / Dr. Strange crossover movie a la Hulk in Thor 3, I just don't want Peter to be Strange's sidekick.

A more modern Ripped from the Headlines take would be if the tragic deaths in her backstory were from murderous cops.

While I don't think any exec would greenlight that, it would offer an incentive for Riri to become Ironheart. She probably wouldn't be inclined to trust the police to protect the community after that. Hence deciding to build her own suit of Powered Armor so that she can protect the community instead.

I don't think it's far-fetched to use Rhodey's niece (I forgot her name) and make her a composite character between her comic self and Riri.

Wouldn't be the first time it happens either, since MCU!Hela nabbed her backstory of older sister to Thor from Angela.

The "death by cops" origin would probably be in a t.v. show but not a movie.

Somewhat on topic for this thread, here's a hard-to-understand article by one of the MCU's scientific advisors, who indirectly came up with the idea of using Ant-Man's shrinking technology as a time machine.

Anyone else think if Wonder Woman 1984 is successful with Cheetah we might see Tigra in the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

Maybe in the She-Hulk show. Jessica Jones stole Patsy so Jen will steal Tigra. From nobody. Because nobody has Tigra.

Jen will have Tigra. And then she'll be awesome.

Because the MCU can make a somebody out of anybody.

Plus, Greer is a former cop. That might be a good ally for an Attorney to have. And Cops need (though maybe not deserve) some positive media right now....though maybe if they made the damn effort themselves.

[up]A small part of the problem that caused American police to have their (wholly earned) negative portrayal right now has been that American police have been portrayed with rose-tinted light, even in shows (Brooklyn 99, Law and Order SVU) that cover some of their faults. (40% are domestic abusers, bad cops making death threats against the good ones or forcing them out, exploitation and rape of sex workers, etc.)

In fact, most of the Netflix shows include at least one story of corrupt policing and politicians...

A positive thing about the MCU is that it doesn't gloss over some of the grim realities of the real world, but instead leans into them to show fictional stories of what we could do if we real people were better:

  • An inventor whose top priority is protection of others, and not making himself richer (though he can't help but get richer, since that's how money usually works)
  • A soldier who with words alone can get people to quickly act against a surveillance/police state
  • A wealthy country sharing knowledge and resources without colonizing or installing dependent regimes
  • War refugees finding a home in a new country and being left unbothered
