Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

No, no, Steve's main flaw is excessive loyalty. He is too selfless: refusing to offer an opinion or contradict an order because it's his duty to serve. He's the hero who jumps on the grenade to save his friends even when he doesn't have to. If the government issued a mask order, he'd be the first person on the street handing them out and setting an example.

What his loyalty and patriotism blind him to is that sometimes the people he works for aren't morally upstanding. Sometimes they are corrupt or compromised or just plain wrong, and he has to learn to trust his own feelings instead of steadfastly following authority.

His arc is complete when he is able to commit an act of pure self-gratification without worrying about its effect on others.

By contrast, Tony is all about setting his own path: not being told what to do. He has to overcome that to work as a member of a team, to develop loyalty to his team over his own fears and ego, and ultimately to sacrifice himself to save the world.

That was only Steve's flaw until Winter Soldier. Post "SHIELD was corrupted by HYDRA from go" he goes on the opposite bend. His whole position is summed up with "the safest hands are still our own" as he refuses to cooperate with the governments of 117 nations.

[up][up]On the other hand him in civil war does do that without understanding how he come to other, specially the part of "I have to save other so I cant stand here", you can see tony look of irritantion to steven because he set himself a duty and them ignore everything for said duty, is a actitude that breed rebellion.

Steve is loyal to principle over people, which can be a problem in general.

[up]Tony and Steve does a complete 180 position from avenger to civil war: tony is the one who stick to everyone to enforce the rule and steven decide his is the only who can trust.

the irony is lost to them of course.

In my opinion Steve's greatest flaw was his hypocrisy, and he seemed aware of it too.

He preached peace and love, but deep down needed war and conflict to feel whole, as Ultron pointed out.

[up][up]One thing I would love the film explore is that if ultron is tony unfettered them that opinion is tony opinion, he really thing steve is a soldier who need a war.

if you contrast of what he told spiderman "you are wrong, you think you are right, that make you dangerous" kinda said how tony see steve....

I feel that T'Challa and Carol are going to be the main faces for the MCU going forward (with Thor still serving to round off the trio). I don't think they'll replicate the dynamic that Tony and Steve had, but if they ever make another big team-up film, I can see those two leading the rest of the heroes.

I think it’ll be more like T’Challa, Carol, and Peter as the trio.

Then again, with the nature of Sony and Disney temperamental relationship...who knows?tongue

Peter is too young to be part of the Big 3 yet, he'll remain the Kid Sidekick for now.

I think it will be T'Challa, Carol and Dr. Strange.

Tony's dead, who is Peter supposed to be a kid sidekick to?

Get Matt Murdock or Jennifer Walters, right now he needs legal counsel more than a mentor.

One of the few thing about scott that his hilarious is how he got again in prision after all that happen in the first movie.

I have to agree with pym here, scott was an idiot.

Same thing that happened to the "original" Howard the Duck, wink.

Been hearing some good buzz about The Old Guard from Gina Prince-Bythewood. It'd be something if she wound up directing Blade. Or if not her, then Nia DaCosta, who's making that new Candyman...

He’s self assured enough to take up one of the poles of the superhero community

No, Tony killed Tony. I would give Strange credit for figuring out that killing Tony was necessary, but really Tony figured that part out without it Strange needing to explain it.
