Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

I honestly feel a comic faithful mask is too silly to work in live-action. I know that's saying a lot when they've made things like Rocket and Groot work, but at least those make sense, it's just their face. The Goblin wearing such a weird mask defies explanation. I think you'd kind of have to make it look more practical to some degree, like they did with Vulture's costume.

I think we're moving past the idea that things have to look as realistic as possible to be believable. That's always been something of an excuse studios used to avoid taking risks in the first place: the public will accept a lot as long as it's presented in a cool way and written well.
I remember back when people were assuming Mysterio wouldn't have his fishbowl helmet in Far From Home because after all there's no way the public would take such a silly costume seriously.

"In the comics he has a fishbowl on his head, we can't do that it's gonna look insane!"
"Actually we are gonna do it and it's gonna look awesome."
"How do we manage to pull that off."
"Because we're Marvel."

Howard the Duck series for Disney+ when? Seriously, you can chronicle how he wound up with The Collector, where he was during The Snap and what happened during the five year time-skip.
I'd compare it to The Lion King 1 1/2...but I can't think of any overlap beyond those two scenes he had in the GOTG movies.

What if they made the Green Goblin mask motion-captured?
...Or would that cause people to freak out and get too distracted because they're like "how is that a mask?!"
Also, someone said Rhodey donning the Iron Patriot would put the kibosh on Armored!Norman, but would it though? What if the US Government confiscates the armor from Rhodey and Norman ends up buying it?
(Geez, I wish they just revealed The Benefactor is Norman already. 99.5% of the internet wants the Benefactor to be Norman anyway.)
If we're talking goofy stuff from Marvel that the MCU adapted, Professor Hulk with Mark Ruffalo talking normally while as Hulk.
I'm basing this as I predicted here that they'll do Professor Hulk after adapted Howard the Duck and that I was told it wouldn't work if it's Ruffalo talking normally as Hulk.
I really hope that if the MCU uses Osborn or anyone else as a Goblin, they go with the mask route, not a "clearly armor" look or an actual physical transformation. For what it's worth, I'm kind of interested in seeing Roderick Kingsley.
I am on board with the idea of introducing Osborn as The Benefactor and potentially also going with the route of him leading a Thunderbolts team.
That being said, I have a sense (based on little evidence) that the MCU might be going the route of having Thunderbolt Ross leading a team of anti-heroes and/or villains pretending to be heroes, and I'd think the MCU would need to choose one or the other.
RE The Chameleon, I would like to see him in the MCU and those masks are a ready way of explaining his powers. However, I kind of feel like having those masks exist (not to mention Talos) takes away from what makes The Chameleon cool and mysterious.

Y'know, assuming that the Green Goblin has the technology to build a hyper-expressive mask (reasonable, considering some of the other tech he has access to), there's actually a good reason for giving himself a green-skinned, inhuman looking face that nevertheless looks like a living face rather than a mask. In the MCU, if people see a supervillain with that face, they're likely to assume he's yet another alien invader, and won't even consider the idea that it might be a mask disguising a regular old human.
That's also true. I feel the same way about it that I do about Batman, there's a whole lot of villains in their Rogues Gallery with untapped potential that I'd rather see than constant rehashing of the most popular ones.
Well, even both the Amazing series and the MCU have been taking it slow with Osborn.
Amazing didn't have him appear until the second movie (and was more of a Greater-Scope Villain in that) who supposedly was dying, and he hasn't shown up in the MCU at all. It seems they are saving Norman for later. I'm guessing he won't show up before Otto does, since the two of them seem to be going back and forth on which of them is Peter's real Arch-Enemy ever since Otto started picking up his game with Ends of the Earth and Superior Spiderman.
Time will tell though.
One Strip! One Strip!Spider-Man has a rogues gallery rich enough they could perfectly well do a whole trilogy without using any of the previous featured villains. As observed, Kraven the Hunter and Hobgoblin have never shown up in film form and they're some pretty big ones. There's also some of the more underrated/recent ones like Mr. Negative, Tombstone, Hammerhead, Spencer Smythe, Silvermane and Sin-Eater. Hell, toss in Jackal and Spot and you have a party.
From the foes in the Raimi/ASM trilogies the high-profile one I could more easily see again would be Doctor Octopus, particularly since Doc Ock has a habit of getting different characterizations with each writer (while still sticking to the broad "mad scientist with mechanical appendages" concept). But really, Spidey has villains to spare. Use them.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."

I don't think we should count Spider-Verse, it's not like DC fans count all of the DC animated films when thinking of things to do with the movies. Besides, Spider-Verse also had a Green Goblin in it.
